Depends on the book. The simpler the formatting, the fewer changes there are.
The most visible examples of trashed formatting are blockquotes and sections with special left and right margins - letters, diary excerpts, newspaper articles and so on. Mobi doesn't do the right margin, only the left, so all those parts with specified symmetrical margins only retain the left one and will look like they've been pushed to the right. Looks very ugly IMO, but then again, I'm sure lots of people wouldn't be bothered. If it were the simplest option to get rid of embedded fonts, then yes. But it isn't, especially for a Kobo device. Converting to kepub will get rid of them just as well and retain the epub formatting. Converting from epub to epub while checking the fonts option in the conversion settings is also better than converting to mobi. |

I almost always only read very simply formatted books, and I am pretty insensitive to format etc as long as the book is readable.
I never use kepub. Should I? I will add that converting to mobi and back to epub removes any device crashing gremlins. I have found that linux-based ereaders (Kobo and Sony) are vulnerable in a horrid ways to gremlins in epubs. I have seen massive battery drain due to certain epub, and db corruption. Convert to mobi fixes that. According to your words, I suppose conversion to kepub will also fix that. Last edited by Pajamaman; Yesterday at 07:07 PM. |

Can't say I've seen such gremlins, but then I edit all my books manually.
The kepub reader on a Kobo is more robust and less sensitive to "gremlins", so reading kepub instead of epub may help. Also checking for and auto-fixing errors in the calibre editor. Sometimes crashing may be caused by an epub that consists of one huge html file instead of many (very rare occurrence with newer books, but more common 10-15 years ago) and in that case you can split it into smaller parts with the editor. Yes, converting to mobi will get rid of some of those problems too, if you don't mind the loss of formatting. |

Converting ePub to Mobi to ePub (IMHO) is a very stupid thing to do. It's bets to learn HTML/CSS to be able to fix whatever needs fixing.
