does anyone know if the Kindle 2 will fix the backlighting like the new Sony? I love my Sony505 but am absolutely disgusted with the Sony eReader store - it's one access and dwnload problem afer another. I just bought the new 505 cover with lighting and it makes an amazing difference. Bottom line, want to ditch Sony Store, but can't give up the new lighting effect. Will the new kindle 2 have lighting?

good news : you don't have to buy from the sony store ! either you can buy drm-free books from places like Baen books or fictionwise (they are called "multi-format" there), or if you like recent books which are only available with drm, i recommend you look into a tool called "convertlit" which will allow you to buy Microsoft reader (lit) format books and remove the drm. then, you can use calibre to convert them painlessly to epub format for your sony. no more sony store problems. and a much wider selection of books to read.

also, have you checked our free books here ? click on "ebooks" in the blue nav bar at the top of the page.

I do not want back lighting....its so much easier to read on the e-ink display as it is. Like reading a paper book. I don't care for the eyestrain caused by backlighting.

point of order, there is no such thing as "backlit" e-ink ; it's impossible, because e-ink screens are opaque. the lighted 505 cover is more like "frontlighting". i don't think we've heard anything about kindle integrating a lighting system but if it does, it would most likely (almost assuredly) be something like a lighted cover (like for the 505) or side-positioned leds like on the sony 700 (which can be turned off). so as long as you stay with e-ink you don't have to worry about eyestrain from backlighting.

can we also have a point of order when someone says backlighting, we will assume Lighted screen, no matter what the position of the lights.

sorry. i usually do ; i only replied here because i had the impression that desertgrandma was confused. apparently she wasn't. my apologies for superfluous pedantry. (oh, and it's "hear hear", since i'm being pedantic already. )

Than you, madame z for the elucidation.

I was most certainly not confused about backlighting and e-ink display. Reading post after post on the amazon discussions boards about people whining and moaning about 'why isn't there backlighting' I finally understood the reasons.

The Might brite 2 flex light is working beautifully, when I need it. Unfortunately, lately, whenever I need it, I'm too tired to read, so its off to sleep without a book...

M-edge has recently release a Kindle cover that does this. I haven't seen a review of it yet on the Kindle forum. Personally, I'm fine with just clipping a booklight onto my regular cover when I need it. The 700's lighting sounds nifty but I keep hearing the screen looks less clear. I definitely wouldn't want to sacrifice any clarity for the feature. If they can integrate lighting with no compromise, I'll be all for it.

It has a removable light that the cover is designed to hold.
There have been reviews, some like it, but all agree that it isn't as bright as the might brite2.

i wholeheartedly agree with you since i don't want any kind of integrated lighting, so sacrificing clarity for a feature i don't want is annoying. that said, i did use the 700 lighting feature once and was glad to have it, although i never expected to.

Really?

We also don't know if the US really put a man on the moon. It was all shot in a sound stage in order to stop the Russians from continuing their research because they were so far ahead of the US.

Oh, and the CIA shot Kennedy because he wanted to put our money back on the gold standard.

It's bad form to use information that can't be substantiated in debate. It undermines your argument. You don't agree because you assume that Amazon has sold more Kindles than it can make, but that's an assumption, not a fact. If it is true, then I still take points away from Amazon for planning their production so poorly.

And both of your conspiracy theories could be true, but a) they are more far-fetched than the scenario I (and others on these forums) have proposed and b) I haven't used either of those points in my posts to validate my opinion.

My point was that I find Amazon's reluctance to release sales information unsettling and therefore wouldn't presume to put them at the top of any sales lists. If they're doing so well and moving so many units, then I don't believe they'd be so tight-lipped about their sales trends.

Um... yea this was EXACTLY what you were doing when you were saying that Amazon was manufacturing some type of pretend shortage and backlog to make the Kindle look more popular.

Just being pragmatic this is not a good business decision. Suggesting this is akin to suggesting the other unproven and unsubstantiated drivel that I posted about (Kennedy/Moon shot.)
