I do mean an eInk Kindle. With the pre-2.8.0 version of KindleforPC, you can download older eBooks and remove the DRM. But with a Kindle, you don't have to worry about it because eventually Amazon will make you upgrade to the latest KindleforPC and I have no idea if older eBooks can have the DRM removed.

You are best to get a Kindle that will not download KFX. That means the latest Kindle will be a 1st gen Paperwhite or earlier all the way down to the K3.

A K4PC install 2.7.1 or earlier can download Amazon books without the hardened DRM. Those books with the appropriate software and mystic incantations can be imported into calibre. There is a new version of K4PC 2.8.0 which, as of this time, prevents removing DRM.

At this time, I would say the easiest way to import Kindle books into calibre is to use an old eInk Kindle.

Sorry for all the confused posts.

I had an error when converting KFX to EPUB because I had copied the book to my pc before the book had been fully downloaded to my kindle. I have a Formats column in calibre and its template is

{:'re(approximate_formats(), ',', ', ')'}

If the book has been fully downloaded it will say KFX in that column. When it's partially downloaded it says something like KFX ZIP (if I remember correctly).
