Updating Calibre doesn't remove installed plugins, settings etc.

According to the Calibre plugin index, QualityCheck is a plugin.

FWIW, I maintain a document setting out my Calibre configuration, including a list of plugins that I have installed, their settings, and images of the toolbars. This simplifies things if I ever need to install it again.

Following the link it said that one could update with just paste the KoboRoot.tgz and reboot the reader. I did this, but the NickelMenu still doesn't work. The same message is shown.

I don't really understand your instructions for configuring. You say that I should create a file of any type. Which file types can I choose to create the KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/config file? Then you tell me to follow the instructions in the same file, but it is empty, so how can I follow any instructions.

PLease see the attached images of what is on my reader. I don't find any current KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/config file. Could this be it, that it is missing?

You should find a file called doc in the /adds/nm directory but every entry in that file is commented out ( the # at the start of a line makes it a comment). I attached a sample config file to a previous message. Just copy the file into the nm directory.

NickelMenu does not create a config file since there are so many options that many people will never use so it's left to the user to create the file based on the documentation in the doc file.

That seems very clever to do.

What about the My Shelves column, the genre categories I have created for this column to label the books? Will they be intact when updating Calibre?

Aha, sorry I missed the file. I also missed that it was the pathway, not the filename.

Ok, so in the nm directory there was a doc file with the config file. Do I just I past your file into this directory without changing the file name? ANd do I keep the doc file? According to another member I should create a new config file.

You can add multiple files in the nm directory and they will be used by NickelMenu. The doc file as mentioned before is nothing but comments. I used the .txt extension to make it easier to attach the file on MobileRead but NickelMenu does not care.

You will need to edit it to remove the hash marks from the items that you want to use before it'll do anything. You might find that you have some lines like this:

menu_item :main :Sleep ower :sleep
menu_item :main :Shutdown ower :shutdown
menu_item :main :Reboot ower :reboot
menu_item :main :USB Connection :nickel_misc :force_usb_connection

Note that those lines do not begin with a hash. These examples would give menu items Sleep, Shutdown, Reboot and USB connection, and they should then do what they say. Obviously, those might not be the particular ones that you want to use: they're just ones that I like.

Success! The NickelMenu now works. BIG THANKS EVERYONE

It must have been the new added file from DNSB that did the trick. Was the existing doc file maybe corrupt?

They should be. I have a few custom columns and they survive updates.

Hmmmm I updated Calibre with success, but after rebooting the computer as per instructions, Calibre had vanished completely. I installed the update while the existing Calibre was open. Could that have interfered and caused an error?

Or what happened? Why did the newly updated Calibre suddenly disapear. It's not in start menu and nowhere else.

If I install the new downloaded update again, this will probably install a completely new version of Calibre with no plugins installed and all my settings removed

I do this as well, but I also keep a back-up copy of my configuration folder. Just recently my computer unexpectedly crashed and lost all my calibre customizations (the config folder still existed, but for some reason calibre no longer read it). I deleted the old config folder and replaced it with the one from backup. All worked as before.

Assuming that you use Windows, check C:\Users\[your_username]\AppData\Roaming\calibre . If that folder is there and has stuff in it, a reinstallation should pick it up.

Trying to update whilst Calibre was running probably wasn't the best idea ever, but I'd have expected the attempt to result in an error message telling you to close it and try again. However, I've never tried it, so I'm not sure of this.

I found the app in the program folder. And the app opens with settings seemingly intact. And it worked to send a book to the reader. I have also put it in the start menu and the activity field again.
