As far as I know, it's part of their custom security app. It allows you to save stuff to a USB drive but disallows copying files from the USB drive to local storage or executing a file from a USB drive. I tried two USB drives and I could copy from one drive to the other.

Small Update:
I'm almost 100% positive it was an issue with the physical port, as I am having difficulty charging the e-reader now. My hunch is that the shielding for the port has come just loose enough that cables are no longer being properly seated (the port itself seems to be properly anchored to the PCB, as it has no flex/give when light pressure is applied). I'm looking into ordering new port to solder on, as a new motherboard from iFixit is $60 CAD, not to mention they've been out of stock for a couple months now....

Edit: I was also able to borrow a friend's windows laptop and when I plugged it in the computer recognised that something was plugged in, but it was not connecting.... I can't remember the exact error message. I also tried dozens, possibly even every single cable in the house and was met with no success.
