[theducks] I would rather go for WORKING and RELIABLE, than making it 'pretty'.
Amen BROTHER! If it ain't broke be happy with it. From what I saw there were several "Great suggestion! A conversion feature is on my to-do list and will be supported soon. Thanks for the input!" I've invested, I guess at least 2 decades in Calibre, and unless Covid decides he's wants to come to my house and put material into my library for me. I find my time puttering in Calibre quite pleasant. I've been using Calibre since around 2.0 or 3.1 or there-a-bouts. I find Calibre easy to use, easier over time to make changes or whatever. I've made lot's of library rebuilds and choices throughout that time frame. And I find I'm happy with Calibre's looks and actions. I think Covid mentioned a while back the library ran nicely to around 150,000 books. Two months back at 224,000 making any cell change was taking around 5 seconds to save. So I have divided my library into two. Everything but the comic books will remain in the main library. If the time comes to divide another choice from the main library, I can do so in one simple move and walk away while Calibre handles the grunt-work, no matter if it takes over a week for it to drop the materials in. Plus, I am a tad lazy, the one change I keep hoping to see some day is being able to use a slider switch to re-size the book covers in the cover grid view. That would be much easier than inserting the size numbers. Then I honestly could not think of wanting for anything else. Have I mentioned that "I love my Calibre?" Plus Calibre has been a fixture in my life almost a quarter of a century while other library's came and went, usually pretty quickly. |

I think a new Calibre Companion that worked on recent Android versions would be just fine.

Having a server backend is kinda nice, but it looks like it is entirely browser based for the front end, which I am not a fan of.
I just wish that I could have Calibre use a server for storing the metadata and files, so I could access the same library across multiple devices. |

The Calibre Content server seems to work fine on WiFi with Pocketbook app on Android using OPDS rather than a Browser, though also works with a browser. Since there is only one instance of that as part of the single running copy of Calibre with its local files it's unlikely to mess up.

I might have confused things by thinking the OP wanted a external (not the Library PC) file connection.
The Content server STILL works with my old MultiPie version of Calibre companion from my TAB A (has Moon+. I never explored newer viewer direct to server support). What I don't have (or really want), is the ability to make Changes to the Library via the device. The Browser interface now allows some of that (it is a single internal connection to the data, just has multiple "content server" clients, not DB clients. |
