I have a registered Paperwhite, which might be why I'm able to do it as well... I have no idea. I don't think it has to do with the original question about sideloading with calibre though. I might be missing something.

If you select the Download & Transfer option, which of your Kindles are offered as a target device?

It just gives you a Kindle number, but I've just looked under devices and it was the Paperwhite, it doesn't offer the Scribe Kindle # for the USB transfer... so there it is. Can't use the Scribe.
