hello everyone,

here's what i did to get the dictionnary :

- I registered my kindle on my account,
- I downloaded all the dictionnaries I need
- I put my kindle on the plane mode
- I finally deleted my kindle from my account

it's also a good way to get the possibility to create collections

I would agree with your steps up to deleting the Kindle from your account. Most of the people I know who have gone your route leave the Kindle on their account so they can use Download & Transfer via USB for when they do want to purchase an Amazon ebook and get it to their Kindle without leaving airplane mode.

I agree. Only delete/unregister the Kindle if giving it away.

Do you remember if amazon require some kind of ID verification or can you register with fake credentials? I don't want to give them my phone number either

Also is the vocabulary builder still working after you deleted your account?

DNSB: can't you simply buy the books then sideload them via USB or am I missing something?

In order to be able to use Download & Transfer via USB, you need a pre-2024 Kindle registered to your account. However, you can buy ePub eBooks from somewhere else. But if they have DRM, you'd need ADE, calibre, and the DeDRM plugin. Also you would need an Adobe account meaning you'd need to register with Adobe.

OK I understand, I have no intention of ever buying from amazon anyway but still somewhat irritating to have to jump through so many hoops to simply read a book on your device that you paid good money for.

Who would've thought bezos could make the simple act of reading so unnecessarily complicated?

Looks like jailbreaking + koreader is the only viable option at this point

I bought a kindle, registered it, bought a book and read it. No hoops involved. I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for, but see you are not buying from Amazon. If you are on line be assured you are a node it many superbrains. Good luck in your quest.

You don't need an Adobe account to use ADE or to use deDRM. You only need an Adobe account if you want your EPUB loans and purchases from across the web to be associated with your account so you can log into a device and authorize the related EPUBs.

I am using ADE without an account.

Interestingly, a lot of the push to register was enforced around software version 15.14. I have bought several secondhand Kindle Paperwhite 11th Generation devices that have never been opened or registered. I never registered them and use 100% offline. They came with the Oxford English Dictionary and VoiceView (which I might have updated, I cannot recall).

The software version is 15.13.xx and has a Home screen with one large book icon and a Reading List on the right. There is no pop-up to register the device when you click on the home screen. There's no persistent Bluetooth icon in the top drag-down menu, and it only comes on with VoiceView in this version.

I bought a separate Kindle that I registered for KU, Translation and Wikipedia. This was before I knew about Kobo and PocketBook, unfortunately.

Thanks for the feedback man but I've honestly decided against kindle at this point. Way too invasive and locking me out of the vocabulary builder which is the only kindle specific feature I actually want. Just too many headaches and way too invasive, plus I wouldn't put it past them to secretly connect to unregistered devices and take your data anyway. I wouldn't put anything past them, they are predators of the highest order
