People report them lost or stolen, so Amazon blacklists the serial number.

I guess I'm in the minority as my Kindles have come from local thrift shops and ebay and none has been blacklisted. The ebay ones were being sold by their owners sure it could've been a lie told by them but I had no problem registering them as mine. I don't buy non user repairable e readers anyway so a battery change is expected whenever I get a second hand device.
Unclaimed Baggage is where I saw a bunch of PW but if you're worried about them being blacklisted, the chances of that with these might be higher. Woot or Amazon Warehouse might be a place you're more comfortable with as the Kindles here are refurbished trade ins or returns because the buyer didn't like the lights or something. |

Amazon owns Woot.
Generally I'll only buy S/H gadgets etc from the local CEX store; typically they give 2 years warranty and do have Kindles (though IMO a bit overpriced, but not as badly as Apple stuff). Occasionally CEX has bargains. They offer a credit note when you return but have always given back cash / card refund is slightly pressed. Easier than local supermarkets for returns. Buying from a local store means you can see it and also return instantly if Blacklisted or faulty. |

Generally, blacklisting means the device has been reported to Amazon as lost or stolen. Another common instance when purchasing a used device is that the person selling the Kindle did not de-register the device from their account before selling it.

That will work unless the account credentials the device was registered with have been changed. At one point, I seem to remember that when you lost or had your Kindle stolen, changing your Amazon account password was recommended but that was quite a few years back.

When posts in this thread say "unclaimed baggage", do they mean unclaimedbaggage.com?

Since John started this thread, I will mention that since I keep my wi-fi on, Amazon did not erase any of this inherited content. |

It's a lot of hassle to try to find a PW5 that's at a reasonable price just to then to maybe have to return it.

I agree - I think the kindle prices are ridiculously high. I just ordered the basic kindle as a Christmas gift for $120 as a black Friday deal. It’s listed as $145 in Canada. It’s makes me wonder if Amazon is trying to push people to read on their phones, so they can phase out the ereaders.
