I appreciate all of the replies.

Before trying anything else, I thought I'd have a go and installing the new version to see if things would be ironed out.

As far as dark mode goes. It looks as if it's asking me to set the colors. It appears there is no simple default switch to invert things.

Is that correct?

does anybody know how to achieve dark mode on the new version of calibre? It appears that the program is asking me to adjust color values, once I go into the dark mode option.

Look & Feel -> Adjust colors -> Color palette: Dark

thanks for your help.

So I got to the screen which gave me the choice of light or dark mode. I clicked dark mode and it showed me the colors that would constitute the dark mode. I let them alone, and hit apply, and then ok on the next screen. Unfortunately, nothing happened.

Above the choice of colors and the light/dark mode tabs there is another selection box: color palette. Set it to dark.

I recall when I searched for that setting in the previous version, that there was an actual category called ignored devices, and then seemed to indicate that there were none. Preferences opens up a big menu, and I think the ignored devices is under one of those options.

I connected the kobo to my PC via USB, but despite clicking the connect screen on the e-reader (it asked me to do that two or three times) I see that it is not showing up in Windows Explorer as anything.

Then I got a Windows Explorer notification on the bottom of my screen, that the device could not be read, that it had malfunctioned.

Ok. So until that issue is resolved, calibre ca not see the device.

Does the Windows message give you the option to check the disk? If so DO it

So, here's the oddity.

I just plugged in the aura, and received no error message on the PC. I also did not get the message on the kobo to cancel or connect.

I decided to sync the device, and it seemed to download something and recognize the sync as complete.

Quite befuddling.

By the way I'm running Windows 10 64-bit. Also, I'm able to connect to overdrive (Libby) without issue.

Update:

While I was trying to hunt for a book on overdrive, the cancel or connect option on the kobo finally came up on the screen. The message says "connected and charging."

We'll see……

Update 2:

So after doing that, the kobo does show up in Windows Explorer, and checking in properties shows that it is recognized as a drive.

But nothing shows up in calibre.

Earlier, I was trying to find out where the setting in preferences is for "ignored devices."

You should find Ignored devices under Preferences => Sharing.

Do you have another cable you can use to connect the Kobo to the PC as the current one may be failing hence the cannot/can connect to the PC issues. The cable may look good but general wear and tear can break the wires inside the cable with no visible signs on the outside.

some definite progress here.

The connect screen did come up, and after doing so kobo does show up in Windows Explorer, and it shows up at the very bottom of the calibre window. No icon anywhere, but a simple "connected to kobo".

What started all of this was that I wanted to download a PDF of a book into the kobo. But does the PDF need to be converted to EPUB?

just to try, I selected the PDF which I had downloaded to calibre, and hit the convert button at the top of the window. Since this program handles many file types, where do I choose PDF to EPUB, if that's a necessary step?
