I used to live in the San Francisco Bay area, I was in the absolute center, 7.2 million people all stressed out and ready to snap. To relieve the stress it was moving away only 130 miles to a small town of 4,000 people. The kid down the block walking his dog says good morning sir, how are you.

That move was 1 1/2 years ago and I am so glad I did it. That may be extreme for stress relief but it sure worked for me.

Life is definitely a whole different pace in rural communities. It took some getting used to (and I didn't live in a city the size of San Francisco), but I like it! Can't imagine moving back. Just going back to do some shopping and dealing with the traffic stresses me out!! Where's my FOOD?

Homemade mashed potatoes (put thru a ricer to eliminate lumps) with butter?

Hot popcorn with butter?

Deep fried mini-corndogs?

I just made some FRESH oatmeal raisin cookies....

Aww, but I like the lumps. The Loved One doesn't though, and with him being chief cook, I'm just happy to get dinner.

I should say, another way I cope with stress, from my little hidey-hole, is through over-compensation of my mood. That is, my withdrawal can sometimes be compensated for with the internet-relief of...well, let's just call them my more "enthusiastic" posts.

The mind's a funny thing. Yours especially so, desertgrandma.

Cheers,
Marc (Ha! I made me laugh!)

How I handle stress:

1. I clean things;
2. I build things;
3. I organize things;
4. I eat chocolate;
5. I drink lots of Welch's grape soda pop;
6. I eat popcorn;
7. I listen to comedy albums and classical music;
8. I read;
9. I walk the dogs and play with the cats;
10. I take a chill pill (what ever is in the cabinet);
11. I read; and
12. I nap.

No order to the list, I combine them as necessary.

I meditate, pretty much every day. I see this as preventative maintenance.

I read. avoidance and escapism. Not too healthy I suppose but I am surprised this has not come up already.

I go away to quiet places and hike and take photographs.

I ride my bicycle and go to gym.

AND I STILL GET STRESSED Perhaps I should just take the pill.

Hmm, how do I handle stress? Depends a bit on the weather and where I am at the moment...

When I get home from work (especially if there were those people on the road that just don't know how to drive), I'll just kill the engine and sit. In the car. Listening to the sound of silence (in summer, add the sounds of birds to it).

At work, I'm never stressed. I'll make sure of that

And if I'm at home, I'll just slam a few doors (not many to slam, but it just feels good), crawl behind my pc and go play a game. Or crawl into bed (after slamming the bedroom door) and go reading a book (only to find out I didn't charge my PDA, thus adding to the stress...)

When I'm getting stressed by my pc, I'll just turn it off. You know, with that big button on the front (the power cord is a bit harder to reach...)

I run from stress (literally), at least every Friday morning (Friday´s my day off) and always the the same route.

Things that would help on other days:
- Jump trampoline (we have one in the garden, a few minutes are usually enough to get away from it all)
- Cooking / baking; on days when murphy´s law rules , we make those (see pic below, they are filled with apples and served with vanilla ice cream)
- Build huge towers, buildings and cities with the kids (we use lego bricks, sounds odd, but is quite calming)

It really depends upon how much and why I'm stressed.

If its because I'm worried about something or someone, I'll usually pray for a little while and then try to zone out after that. I'll usually do that by reading, usually an old favourite or at least something from a favourite author (like a security blanket )

If that doesn't work, and I'm completely stressed out, I'll put on a podcast or audiobook and try to catch a nap, if possible. As I tend to lose sleep if I've been worried or tensed a couple hours of sleep usually helps to get the stress down to a manageable level.

If I'm stressed and pissed off, either because of a person or a series of events, I like to try and get rid of some of the anger, preferably not on anyone as I may say something I may regret later. So I usually try to get away from that person or situation,if possible and work off the edge of the anger by physical activities or if that is not possible, by playing a Video game, either a racer or shooter.

If that's not possible, I'll try to get a little peace, by finding a quiet room or corner, plug in my mp3 player and try to think about something else, and try and calm down.

I did use to binge eat when upset or stressed when younger, but it lead to other problems so I try not to do that now. Still a nice drink (non alcoholic ) such as fresh coffee hot or cold, shake, etc. can de stress a bit faster, and often working to make one can help as well.

1. Jigsaw puzzles.

2. Music - must be careful to use a counter irritant to the stressor, or else it re-enforces the stress.

3. some form of mindless phyiscal activity - but you've already spotted that one...

I usually react to moderate stress like a scared cat(*) - find somewhere nice and safe to hide and lash out at anyone who gets too close. I used to comfort eat, but the tablets I'm on for depression have almost killed my appetite and killed my desire to comfort eat, which is a good thing, really.

If I'm mildy stressed I try and distract myself reading, walking, flitting from one activity to another, slam things, swear, that sort of thing.

(*My own cats never used to do the lashing out bit, though. Instead they'd do their utmost best to pull me into their safe place with them)
