There are certainly devices larger than 6inchs. Basically limited to iRex iLiad and DR1000 though at this point. But, they are much more than $400.

I like both the Sony and Kindle. I have a PRS500. Both are good devices.

In the US you are better of getting the EZReader from Astak. It is the same device as the BeBook... both are rebranded Hanlin V3 readers from Jinkie.

In the US, the Hanlin V3 is the EZ Reader. See for example EZ Reader: Initial Impression, and there are several other reviews since then.

If you search the forum for posts by Robertb you will find all the information that is currently known about the EZ Reader PRO (Hanlin V3 follow-on), for example EZ Reader Plus, PRO, and remote.

Given the three we are discussing then, Kindle, Sony, and EZReader, which would you buy as a long-term use, first-time purchase? Would you wait for Kindle 2 or Sony 70x?

Get the Sony prs 505.

It gets all you are looking for and perfectly in the budget you state.

I am pretty sure that they promised some firmware updates with specific functionality directly when they started to sell the Cybook. We have not seen them yet.

What the Gen3's firmware upgrades (of which there have been 3 or 4 in the course of a year, which I don't personally think is too awful) is fix pretty much all the bugs which have been reported.
The updates have introduced more bugs, they have reduced the battery time and they have not contained promised things like support for setting the time.

If you do not use DRM buy a Bebook and use OpenInkpot. Also if you want folder navigation buy a Bebook. With OpenInkpot you can use FBReader which is starting to support ePub.

After spending more time browsing around this forum, I've stumbled upon something interesting - audio books! So, not to undermine what we've accomplished so far, is it okay to listen to audio books with an ebook reader or is it best to just use an mp3 player of sorts? Listening to audio books would be delightful! I'm finding, however, that the size of some of these audio books might fill the space on a reader pretty quickly. Someone mentioned the Harry Potter series being something like 15 disks long. :-O That's huge!

The iLiad is bigger (and more expensive). It also does PDF as well as secure Mobipocket. Several companies have also been claiming they will have even larger screens out this year. Personally, I would love to have a larger screen for when I read technical documents but the 6" is a nice size for throwing in my handbag. It's a great size for novels.

Most if not all of the ebook readers have a very basic MP3 player. As you say, the files are pretty big so you can expect to put them on the SD cards.

That said, an iPod is a much better choice. Also, I think the only device that supports the Audible DRM (yes there are a few places other than Audible) is the Kindle. For the others you would have to do some type of CD burn/rip to get them into MP3s.

So, I would not worry about it. You can get an iPod which would be much better. There are even smaller 1GB devices you can get for under $50 that support Audible audio books.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I looked at the Ipod Touch and would absolutely love it if the screen was bigger. It looks like Kindle may be the best overall way to go given all my needs. I'm so curious about what the version 2 will bring... perhaps I'll hang tight till then just to see. If I'm going to be spending that much on a device, I really want to make sure it will do everything I want it to do.

VERY few compared with the number they've fixed. They've also introduced some new functionality, such as the "pan and scan" mode for viewing PDFs (not that I use PDF personally, but I know it's of interest to some people).

For audiobooks get a mp3 player.
It’s cheaper, and more important, much easier onto hearing your audiobooks - navigating, battery, you name it.

Even if eBook readers let one listen audio, forget it, it’s of no use.

Best,

Case in point. Today's Woot is a 1GB Sandisk Clip player for $9.99. (yes 10 bucks). It supports Audible too.

http://www.woot.com/

ORDER TODAY... if you are not familiar with Woot... they sell an item for 1 day then move on. Also, that days item could sell out depending on their supplies of it.

I tried to read a pdf book not formatted for the Cybook size on the Cybook and it was not a good experience. Every second page turn you had to press "pan" and when going down on the page there i no marking were you are so it takes a lot of time to find your place. So it is really not useful other than for emergencies.
