I have used a PSP charger since I opened my 505 box. I have never used the USB to charge and have had no decrease in battery charge in over a year.
When it is charging the red light should come on. When it is done it goes off, just like charging through USB. |

![]() So, in summary, two ways to charge: 1)Via PC using USB cable with Blackberry/razr/digicam end into Reader 2)Via wall using AC adapter with circlular end into Reader (yellow hole) |

Very interesting.
Any idea why an AC charger via the USB port would not work? Why would the reader care or know the difference? -Jeff |

The reader would know the difference as you cannot read while charging via the USB port. So why use an AC adapter that takes away this functionality (If it even works)? Seems silly to me.

AIUI, the USB protocol specifies some 'handshaking', which the 'dumb' supplies don't support/supply. Most devices taking power ignore the fact it's missing, but the Sony sticks to a strict interpretation of the spec & doesn't charge.

re: handshaking
Okay, that makes sense. re: read while charging To be honest, Jon. That's not a priority or concern for me. So it's definitely *not* silly. -Jeff |

I bought one of these cables last weekend because I was sick of charging the reader by the PC and getting the database refresh when you unplug it.
I had an AC Adapter with a USB socket on the end and plugging in the cable I bought I can now charge the reader by using the AC Adapter. |

Since I can use a PSP wall charger can I also use the PSP car charger? We are going on a trip and since I'm new to my reader i don;t want to chance running out of battery on the 14+ hour drive. Plus we do a bit of camping.

Thanks Bob! I have the 505. I didn't think I'd need it but the PSP charger stays in the van. So I was just making sure while it was on my mind.

Any charger with the right voltage and polarity should work, it doesn't have to be a Sony branded one. I'm using an old one from a long dead iPaq, and it works fine.

Also, powered USB is 5V even. So even if the PRS charger is set at 5.2V, battery management should handle 5V just fine if it also supports charging over a USB connection.
The difference in charging speed is the amperage. Voltage is the chunk of electricity you get, and amperage is how quickly you get those chunks. The PSP charger and the PRS charger both supply 2000 mA, hence the speed. USB provides a variable amount from 100 - 1000 mA as requested. Negotiation tells the USB controller how much to send to the peripheral, and the software in the device can adjust its charging style based on how much juice it's getting from the controller. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say the without the negotiation, the Reader plays defensive and blocks charging so the USB circuitry doesn't accidentally get wrecked (i.e., we don't know what amperage it wants -- it might only be rated up to 500 mA) at worst, and at best so that the rate of charging matches what battery management expects. |
