Jeff listened attentively, nodding the whole time, and then he said something that shocked me.

“Kindle is DRM agnostic,” he explained.

He went on to explain that publishers have the option of selling DRM-free eBooks for the Kindle and that he believes publishers might do just that once they become comfortable with the idea of digital content distribution.
As pilotbob says, there are a few DRM free ebooks at the Kindle Store. However, my impression is that you have to work hard to get DRM free titles listed. If you go with the flow, the titles will have DRM.

Just sayin' what I was told. Maybe Amazon makes exceptions for people who are nice to them. Or maybe (seeing the post after Bob's) you have to jump through more hoops to get the non-DRM.

So I have a query in to the ereads people, who were surprised to hear that Amazon has any non-DRM books. Their pipeline usually goes to mobipocket.com, which requires DRM, and from there is picked up by Kindle. So they're going to check and see. They would love to be able to put their books in DRM-free.

One example of a publisher with DRM free Kindle ebooks is the Virginia M. Woolf Foundation, see Extra Large Print Kindle ebooks.

They have a good selection of science fiction, as well as out of copyright classics.
