Calibre Portable allows multiple versions to be installed on the same computer. That could lead to all kinds of confusion.

Every time I reboot the PC, I get version 7.... install instead of 5.44. No message, nothing. Why windows accept that I don't know. I tough Avast or Avast Cleanup was responsible for the updating, so I exclude Calibre of Avast updating or search for update but maybe it is too late.

If version 7... wait somewhere in windows to update Calibre, I can't find where. No Calibre 7 msi file can be found on my PC!!!

Is there a way to stop calibre to update or to search for update?

I found windows log files.
The last one is name calibre-64bit-7.21.0.msi_173220580587905

It read :

Installation succeeded with exit code 0
Registry key 'calibre' does not exist.
Repairing Calibre installation...

Repair completed.

No mention from where that come from. And I don't find any calibre-64bit-7.21.0.msi file when I search the computer.

Is that mean Windows view 5.44 as an installation error? Still where 7.21 is coming from?

Why do you want to use such an outdated version of calibre when you can use the current version? 5.44 is rather old and Windows 10 64-bit can handle the current version easily.

Also, calibre does not auto-update. It never has and never will.

That was not my question! Still I have a windows 7 PC with which I sync Calibre.

Anyway I just reboot and I'm still with 5.44. Supposed I did something right somewhere to get rid of my problem.

I did answer the question. The answer you did not quote.

Note the date of the log file and take a poke into the Event Viewer around that datetime (I'd start with Application Logs). If there's some third-party autoupdater going on, it might be logged there.

Also check the Task Scheduler for anything that looks like an updater.

Avast just started updating all my software -- uncommanded (October 24)

This happened to me as well. Removing the cleanup component of Avast also removes the software updater to prevent this happening.

My problem was not with Avast CleanUp I found.

It's the updating function of Avast Premium itself which update my apps without my permission when I launch the Smart Scan !

I have been having the same problem as the other posters: every time I restarted Calibre it was updated to version 7. This had only been happening since month. I found the answer to my problem after a search online. At some point the Microsoft Store settings had switched to "download and install updates to apps automatically.' I turned this off, restarted my computer, and Calibre was at the version I wanted it to be.
I had not changed this setting myself. I did not even know the Microsoft Store had settings that could be changed. I'll make sure I watch out for this the next time my computer is updated.

I was having the same problem with Calibre updating. It turned out there is a setting in the Microsoft Store that allows for automatic download and installation of app updates. This only started to happen last month. When I got rid of this setting, Calibre stayed where I wanted it.

I did not get Calibre from the Microsoft Store yet the only explanation I can come up with for Calibre updating without me chosing to update the app is the Microsoft Store app.
On another computer where the Microsoft Store was not set to automatically download and install updates, Calibre was not being updated.
Since the only difference between the two computers was the updating function in the Microsoft Store app and since Calibre has not updated since I removed that function on the first computer, the only thing I can figure out that could have been causing the updating is the Microsoft Store app. I changed nothing else on the first computer before the behavior stopped. I found that solution when I googled about an app updating on its own without specifying what the app was.

That's not possible for calibre to be updated from the Microsoft Store. Also, it's no longer available in the Microsoft Store.
