If you have a good cover, the PW5 is easier to hold. That applies to all Readers.
The Paperwhite with a cover was too heavy for my nerve damaged wrist. We are all different. I now have an Oasis 3. It is light, balanced, and easy to use one-handed. I had a Kobo Clara HD for a short time and it seemed to weigh next to nothing without a cover. That was wonderful, but I didn't do well without whispersync (for voice), so I went back to Kindle.

It is easier to hold for YOU. That doesn't necessarily apply to everyone else.

I prefer the lopsided shape WITHOUT A COVER. That's the most ergonomic and the easiest to hold for me. No rectangular shape is as comfortable, with or without a cover.

I think the Paperwhite 5 is a good choice. On Prime Day, it was $90. If I can wait till Black Friday, may be able to get that price again.

Why would you want such an old device anyway. get a scribe. it is sooooo awesome! i am not happy with my paperwhite. I hardly used it and it has discolored lines throughout the screen. i still have my Oasis but i stopped using it when i got the scribe. still keep it if i plan on reading out in a park. easier to carry

Not everyone wants to read on a big and heavy device. I sure don't want anything bigger than 8''.

I hope you'll enjoy the PW5! Also it's possible that the Kids edition might still have those with 5.14.0.1 left over in stock (and you basically get a free case with it so why not?), so if you're interested in jailbreaks I would recommend going that route.

According to another thread, the back is going to become loose. Supposedly it's a common issue with Readers.

What would most want to do with a jailbroken Kindle that cannot be done with a Kobo?

The back is loose due to construction faults. It's not going to become loose later if you use the reader without a cover. I've used all my ereaders without a cover since 2018. None of them have developed loose backs.

I know this. It's just that in the other thread, it's said to be a common occurrence when clearly it's not.

It is, we've just been lucky. Of course it's not common in the sense that the majority of users have had this issue; but it's not a rare problem either. And it has certainly nothing to do with using a cover.

And common is probably a relative term.

If the Oasis is registered to Amazon and it's bought ebooks rather than KU, then any ereader will work, not just a new kindle.

I do think using a cover would keep the back from coming loose.
