Hal Clement's _Space Lash_ was quite thought-provoking and a book which I continue to recommend.

For those like me that like to look up such recommendations, Hal Clement's Space Lash is aka Small Changes.

As for a Hawaiian adventure defining your work ethic, I must say that my first thought was: gone fishin'.

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

Freshman in college and my creative writing professor said hey, you might like Kurt Vonnegut. She recommended Breakfast of Champions. It was great! I then started exploring his catalog, hit SH5, and I've been reading ever sense.
