All epubs I send via the send to Kindle website have full font functionality (bold slider). The alignment is greyed out, though. I prefer left justified, but not enough to pay $ to Amazon to replace an epub I already own |

Apparently it doesn't always come back as KF8. It probably doesn't NEED to be epub3, but in this particular case it worked. Extrapolating YOUR experience to everybody else is flawed logic.

The question here is what was wrong with the ePub before it was converted to ePub 3?

From my experience in the past converting epubs to “dual MOBI” files in Calibre and sending them to my kindle over the cloud, the reason I would get an AZW file instead of a KF8 often had something to do with footnotes; I never investigated fully but I did try removing footnotes from books I received as AZW, converting and sending again as a dual MOBI, and getting the KF8 that time around.
But it could also be completely unrelated to the issue here as the conversion from epub is done by Amazon. |

Actually I don't really care what format Amazon sends, as long as I am not losing functionality by leaving them mobi. With a couple thousand books all organized in collections, resending was going to be a lot of work. If the bold slider is all that is gained, I don't need the hassle.

Here's the thing: while it's true that Amazon has started supporting EPUB cover images, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll gain any significant advantages by re-uploading your entire library in EPUB format. The support for EPUB covers mainly enhances the visual appeal when browsing your library on the Kindle. So, if you're interested in having the original covers for your EPUB books, then you might consider resending your library.
However, remember that it's quite a bit of work, and depending on the size of your library, it could take a good amount of time. Mobi might be considered outdated in some circles, but it's still very much functional, and Amazon continues to support it. As of now, there's no real compelling reason, feature-wise, to switch over unless the aesthetics of the EPUB covers are really important to you. If you do decide to go ahead and re-upload your library, I'd recommend using a program like Calibre. It's pretty straightforward to use and can handle bulk conversions and transfers pretty easily. Also, you can always test this out with a small batch of books first to see if you notice any improvements or differences. |

Been using calibre for years. All my mobi pdocs have covers, so that wouldn't be my reasoning. I do use the whispersync feature so sideloading isn't the best option.
I'll probably leave my books as mobi and as I get new, I'll upload as epub |
