What happened to Windows 9 anyways? My best guess is that they didn't want people to confuse it with 9x.

Or maybe 7 8 9

MS about 25 years ago told developers to search registry at install time for features the program needs (like Serial Port, or VGA, or USB), not OS version name.

Allegedly lazy programmers that wrote stuff that would only work on Windows 95a, 95b, 98, 98se etc tested for a string starting "Windows 9".
I don't know if that helped make rubbish Windows ME more rubbish, but it did mean no later version could be called Windows 9.
Though really Windows 10 is NT 8 and Windows 11 would be 9.

I remember Mac OS8, OS9 and then the OS 10 came out about the same time as XP (maybe a little later). Apple thought X for 10 was so cool they stopped incrementing before the period and used names.

MS talked about Windows 10 being the last version too, but changed their mind.

EDIT:
Why does NT start at 3.1? One theory is that after IBM and MS split there was an MS OS/2 including LAN Manager (for servers), that bit is true as I saw it running, so NT had to be 3.

Why Windows 95 rather than Windows 4.x? There was a Windows 4 based on Win3.x, I think for Chinese market, though one system property did return "4.00.95x". Also I suppose since NT was at 3.5, NT 4.0 was already reserved and in development (released 1996). NT 3.51 had extra apis added to Win95 to stop Office 95 being run on Enhanced Win3.1/WFWG3.11 with Win32S. It still used Program manager though there was an Explorer shell beta on MSDN/Technet for NT 3.51.
