Are you certain that Kobo in all the different countries follow the Canadian laws?

It's your Kobo, so you can do what you like.
There is no problem in Ireland. About 7 years with a real address created for Kobo and not a single email.
Also I've used <fakeuser>@<fakedomain> which worked.
I've only got emails on the address used to buy Kobo ebooks (and only purchase notifications).
I've only added sideloadedmode=true after reg, but it can be added easier than editing the sql file.

Kobo does follow Canadian privacy laws since there is only one Kobo headquarters which is located in Canada. Data stored outside of Canada will be subject to the laws where it is stored (one very good reason why all our corporate data that is stored in the cloud is required to be stored in Canadian data centres) but that is an argument for a different day. So no worrying about the Patriot Act or other foreign legislation being used to access your data. Without a court order from a court with jurisdiction being obtained, your data is not going to be released.

Thank you for the info.

From what I've read on MR, Amazon took a different approach. For example(I think), you can borrow library books for Kindles in the U.S. but not Canada due to different lawS in the U.S and Canada?

There were two reasons that Canadian libraries do not support Kindle loans. One being the cost of the loans (not only do you have to pay for the book, you have to pay Amazon for each loan at a higher rate than Overdrive, as an example, charges). The second being privacy. Most Canadian libraries will have a privacy officer and follow the Canadian Standards Association Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information (based on PIPEDA). Compare this to Amazon happily using your library loans as a basis for targeted advertising.

One of my cousins noticed this when he allowed his stepdaughter to borrow ebooks using his library account and he received emails from Amazon about other books by the authors of the books that she borrowed.
