If your Kobo is on it's normal screen, it can not have a USB data connection to your computer and you won't be able to do anything from your computer other than charge your Aura One. |

OTOH, most people would only notice the difference if they have the two screens sitting side by side. |

I think you misunderstand me.
I am not trying to read or do anything on the aura one while it is connecting to the computer. Having not used my E reader frequently, I was surprised that the screen went off, and when I called Kobo they told me that was abnormal! I must tell you that Kobo representatives are not the most helpful I’ve come across. So I know it is connecting to the computer because I’m not only seeing the kobo folder, but I was able to download a free book. H However, it doesn’t seem that my firmware has upgraded to the newest mandatory one. It is currently at 4.35.900400. Another anomaly is that when doing a factory reset the process seems to have failed, as all my books were on my kobo. Possibly this had something to do with the other micro USB cable I was using. Putting that aside, is there an automated nickel menu installation, or does it require, as it seems, significant edits. I would like to get as much out of my aura, one as possible, until I upgrade, and dark mode, which seems possible with a nickel menu, would be a great benefit to me. Thanks! |

That black screen with the image of your kobo, laptop and connecting cable together with the Connected and charging and reminder to eject your eReader before unplugging the USB cable is what you will see when your Kobo is connected.
Currently 4.35.20400 is the latest for devices other than the Elipsa 2E and the Mini. There are multiple factory resets. The one from the Device information menu is a limited variant of the old factory reset. If you type devmodeon in the search box and then search, it will enable Developer mode. You will then see a Developer options item at the end of the Device information options. The factory reset from Developer options will do the full factory reset where your eReader is wiped back to factory firmware version and all your books, accounts, etc. will be removed. Pretty much exactly the same as the manual factory reset when you power off your Aura One, hold the power button for 30 seconds until the Restore screen appears and release the power button. NickelMenu has an automated install but will require creating and editing a config file to do anything. There is a sample config file but all the options are commented out and it may be replaced by an update so create your own config file. You can check the Best of NickelMenu? thread for samples of what other people have put in their config files. |

I’m thinking I might just do the simpler, invert screen
Modification, which simply requires adding a line of text to an already existing file. Doesn’t this achieve dark mode in a different way? |

Dark mode only inverts book text. Inverting the screen changes everything, including images and all the menus in the UI.

Would it necessarily be a bad thing to have everything inverted? With my eye
situation a dark screen is infinitely better, and I’ve started using it for my browsers, and a writing program I use. I would prefer the nickel menu, but I’m not sure I have the visual wherewithal for the more extensive editing. |

You can always turn it off if you don't like it. It's just slightly less convenient, because turning inverted mode on and off requires a reboot each time, whereas dark mode does not.

Here’s an interesting bit of information from a four year old Reddit post. According to the poster, there is a hidden invert screen setting in developer settings.
According to this, you type devmodeon in the Kobo search bar on the device. When you close the search screen after writing that, the option appears in: settings-device information-developer options end invert screen. In the Reddit thread, an aura one user reported success. Any thoughts before I attempt this experiment? |

The invert screen with developer mode on option is still present with 4.35.20400 on a Sage and Clara HD.
I don't like inverted mode since all images are inverted but some people prefer it. |

But what do you think about this simple way to access inverted screen, without any editing?

It works!!!
Simple as pie! No editing! Much easier on the eyes! Thanks for all the help. I must say that my interaction with Kobo tech-support was pretty lousy. They not only seem to be a source of misinformation, but they several times promise to call me back when I asked to speak to a supervisor, and they did not. Great devices but disappointing Support |
