No, I think that is better that Irex keep the price for US, and the money that they lose with the weak dollar, lets pay it by the europeans again with a rise for us.

Its fair.

Probably they will down the price nexts week, the dollar will rise again this days

I don't think Irex is being greedy or anything. I have no idea how much it cost to develop and make the reader, but what I do know is that if they keep the price that high, they will keep a large number of people who may have considered purchasing one, to consider one of their competitors instead.

I have to imagine that this device is even a bit pricey for Europeans as well as Americans.

Electronics is much more expensive for Europeans than Americans generally. The dollar price is usually much lower (as in this case) and the disposable income in the US is usually higher (lower tax and higher salary for the same profession).

Device: Iliad IRex
When the Iliad came out, even until way into the time when the v2 was out, it cost 650 Euro... In fact, I bought one for that price...

A LOT OF PEOPLE forked out 650 Euro for a 8 inch device, for a long period of time...

So people right now have to spend 50 Euro more than they did from Iliad market introduction until middle of last year, to get 2 inch more screen for those 50 Euro... is that too pricey?

The only other device I know of that has more than 8 inch eInk screen is the 12 inch Flepia from Fujitsu Frontech... for 2 inches more than the 10 inches of the 1000 S they don't charge 50 Euros more... they charge 14800 Euro more, the device costing 15500 Euro (if my sources are correct)! OK, it has colour eInk, but who needs that to read books that usually are b/w.

With that I don't want to say that I'm not disappointed with Irex... I planned to buy a 1000 S on monday and I was shocked to see the new price. I didn't order it and will wait until the price is back down again, as sooner or later it will be... but for the moment I can understand Irex too, capitalizing on their product which is, regarding the display size, pretty unrivalled...

I think what you're actually buying is a prototype model, they aren't in full production yet. That's why the price is so high.

In a word? Yes. I bought the v1 Iliad, but I understood the price point because It was an early adopter price. I was also willing to pay that much, because the only choice in e-ink devices at the time was the Sony Librie. Today there are many capable readers that are reasonably priced, IMO, such as the PRS 505, Kindle and Cybook. I certainly understand a larger wacom screen being more expensive, but I feel the price it is currently selling for is way to high for most people to consider.

I understand that manufacturing and marketing may not leave them much much wiggle room in setting a price, but to my wallet that is neither here nor there. I think the digital reader looks like a fantastic device and would love to own it for the pressreader function alone, but that price is just too steep for me. Can I afford it? Yes. Can I justify spending that much money on specialized device? No.

Exactly my position too... my willingness to pay 699 for a better device is much lower than it was to spend 650 on an inferior device, less than a year ago, for reasons I can't easily identify, I still suspect some irrationality behind it... and that probably will be what many people think... but unfortunately, there are scenarios where this won't hurt IRex (and in the end urge them to drop prices again)... like for example when at 599 they couldn't manufacture as many devices as were ordered... in that case a price increase is a sensible (for the company) measure to dampen demand that is higher than what they can satisfy... but until we hear from the company about the reasons (which probably will never happen), all we can do is speculate...

I guess I lucked out and got one of the very last from them for $750. So far it's nice but the battery life (as I knew prior to the purchase) leaves much to be desired. I orig. bought a kindle thinking it could do pdf's but for computer books its terrible. This device has potential and I'm gambling on time/patience to make it better.
