I'm not comfortable making an assessment about how difficult it would be to change someone else's plugin code as I'm not the one who'll be doing it.

If I can answer in a different way ... If getting this working "correctly" (as defined by me) was important I wouldn't be waiting for someone else to update Modify Epub. I'd just set up however many simple regex saved searches were necessary to get the job done in the calibre Editor right now. You can always stop using them if/when the plugin matches your needs better.

Of course, if 'real page numbers' are important to you, then the anchors shouldn't be removed at all because the epub's page-map file needs them.

RPN are not important. But using Diaps Editing Toolbag will remove the Google page markers very easily.
