I double checked it several times and tried perhaps 5 or 6 times, always with the same result. I did a full factory reset at this point, but no change (it was obvious this was done earlier by the previous owner but I did it anyway).

Then I checked my Email later and it said "we are sorry you are having trouble registering your kindle, please use this OTP (one time password) to register your kindle."

Oh great 2nd factor and it didn't say anything about that. And of course the codes all time out after TEN minutes (most OTP codes I deal with last at least 30 minutes to an hour), so they were long dead.

I tried again later and this time when I entered the information it gave a "you are not registered yet, please check your email for further instructions". I did, but no code came through this time. Tried several more times and still no codes. I ended up resetting it and then it gave me the "error no account could be found" like the first few times, but DID give me a one time password in email a minute later.

BUT when I put that in the password field on the Kindle, error. Would not accept it. Tried multiple times with different codes, always the same result.

I did check and apparently Amazon removed the ability to register the serial number on the website, at least easily. I came across an article that said you could still do it by contacting support. Well I did and the guy I got told me to go click the link on the "manage my kindle" which doesn't exist any more lol. Nice, they really train their reps well don't they?

This is insane. They make it so secure it won't work lol. Or more likely they have cut off registering older kindles. I double checked and it has the latest firmware 5.3.7.3 So I am at a loss on what to do next, other than play see how far I can kick a kindle lol.
Register your Kindle from the Kindle. When you get the code texted to your phone, go to register your Kindle again but instead of putting in your password, put in the code. That's what worked for me to get a Kindle Touch registered.

EDIT: I've tested this with a Kindle Touch now (and it registered). When I entered my Amazon account email and password it came up with an error and said to check my email. Got the code in my email, but I had re-enter my email address and then I used the second, 6 digit number, password. And that worked. Not sure why it goes completely out of the registration, but it does. It's confusing, because it makes you think you have to re-enter your account password. The No-Touch Basic is much clearer here.
Even though the Kindle Touch says you'll get an email, you won't. You'll get a text message with a 6 digit OPT code. When I was trying to figure out how to register a Kindle Touch, it was always a text message.

I can use it for unecrypted/noDRM books I get sure, but not for amazon's stuff. :/
You can use it unregistered. As for books with DRM, that is why I mentioned Kindle for Android (not to actually read, but to download the book). With it you can remove the DRM so you can sideload. If you are interested in removing the DRM, check this out: (this will even work if you happen to get your hands on a blacklisted Kindle)

If you need it to work on Linux or Mac, ask at the end of the thread, I tested a way that works universally.

I got an email on both of those I registered yesterday. But I've never logged into Amazon with a phone number, so that might be why.

Sadly that is what I have been doing. I still keep getting the errors. Very strange. But encouraging that others CAN get it to work. I will keep beating on it and see if something sticks.

And in my case it also comes in email. But I never set up a phone with texting ability at Amazon (and pay every time they want to send a code or a reminder, or whatever). It is also strange that it does 2 different errors. If it says "we can't find that account" error I DO get a email with the code. But if I get a "you are not finished, check your email" I DO NOT get the code in email.

I don't have second factor enabled directly at Amazon, or I shouldn't anyway. I will double check that. Perhaps turn it on then OFF again if it isn't. Although my phone didn't have any issues when I logged in their main shopping app earlier, so it should be off.

Insanity is doing the same thing expecting different outcomes. Try something different. Enable two factor verification, see if it decides to work then for you. You still have to act quick, because of the short timeout.

I am well aware of that. But with computer systems sometimes different outcomes happen (or something should work and it don't but then does for no real reason). However, in this case yes I will try something different such as second factor settings see if that is the hangup.

And I submit 2nd factor (99.9% of the time) is the second definition of insanity and a stop gap because most people won't use long, unique, random, changing credentials. A year or so ago I was standing in line somewhere and they were talking about passwords, and one person said "Oh I use the same one for everything" then others were laughing agreeing they did as well. Every SINGLE person there except myself (about 18 or so) were using the same password for everything. That is also insanity. They probably all used "monkey" or "letmein" as their password as well lol.

That is just insanity. I use "password" for everything. Probably from Tolkiens "say friend and enter."

Amazon's 2 factor authorization can get fouled up. It happened to me when trying to log in to my account on a browser from my iPhone. The fix was turn on 2 factor again on my account using my regular iPad. Then I got the email with the code. Before I did that, I kept getting prompts saying they would email the code but the emails never arrived.

You have to pay to receive text messages? I thought most phone plans came with unlimited calls and text.

I recently had a similar issue trying to register a Kindle Touch. The OTP message I received said it would send me an email. It didn’t. It sent a text message to my phone instead. Took me a couple tries to notice it sent a text message rather than an email.

You have to add the one time code to your password. Type your password and the six digits and then hit enter.

Yes. Depends on the plan. I only play $60 a year instead of $60 a month, but that comes with limited minutes and texts. I can get more, but that costs so I stay in my budget if at all possible. Which isn't a problem for me until you have companies texting you for everything. I also don't tend to give out my mobile number very much, I gave it to a bank (for second factor that they FORCED) and right after I started getting spam calls. Considering I didn't give it out to anyone else in a long time, I KNOW how it happened. Hence my lack of trust and why I will not give out my number for second factor any more. If they force it, they lose a customer.

That has been mentioned here. It all depends on if you gave Amazon your phone number or not (for second factor most likely). If you did, it will come that way instead of email.

I wondered about that (and exactly what the combination would be), but several here didn't seem to have to do it. Perhaps some Touches are a little more 'touchy' than others. I will give it a try. Thanks.

I don't know if you can use the T-Mobile network in your area but, if you can, you can pay $5 a month (includes all taxes and fees) for unlimited talk and text and 500 MBs of 4G LTE/5G Data. And this renews every month on a set date, not every 30 days. And included in this price are unlimited International calls to over 60 countries (half landline only, the other half landline and cellular).

I use this is as my "desk" phone. I've never called out of country, but I have used their phone service for eight months, or so, without issues. This plan would be $60 a year.

https://hellomobile.com/shop/plans

You have to click "more plans" to see the $5 plan.

If you can use the T-Mobile network, this sounds like a lot better deal than what you have.
