No. The author sort is automatically set though you can override it during the manual metadata update process. You can create a column to display that value. See attached image for an example. Once you have that column set up, you can remove the checkmark from the Author and just have the author sort column showing.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong but whatever I try I still end up with my books being sorted by first name. I tried the method you illustrated above but it didn't work for me (I probably did something wrong somewhere).

As an experiment, in Preferences => Conversion => Output Options => azw3 output, try checking the Use author sort for author checkbox. Try sending a couple of books and see if the author name comes out the right way around. If so, go to done. If not, convert a couple of azw3 ebooks to azw3 and send them to your Kindle and see if the author names come out the right way around.

Nothing I do seems to work.

I just factory reset my paperwhite again and I'll just keep trying using just a few books and see if I can get it to work correctly.

The simplest and easiest way is to change the author names in your library to Last Name, First Name before sending them to your Kindle. You can do that in bulk with the Quality Check plugin, and change them back afterwards if you wish.

I found a post online that had a method that worked for me --
(it only has the option to use kindle or kindle2, I have a paperwhite but I chose kindle2 and it still worked).

I thought about doing that but it looked like a lot of work.

This is now how they sort

It would be nice if I could also get it to display First name, Last name while still sorting by last name but that's a problem for a different day.

No, it isn't. It's an one-click operation with the Quality Check plugin.
