This review describes this issue in the Quick Review section (Cons):
https://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...-pro-and-cons/ Accepting it as its design, I'll take the best of the Scribe: the best 10" screen and a great reading experience, since I didn't buy it as a notebook Last edited by mg10; 01-05-2023 at 03:03 PM. |

This might be the aforementioned Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/kindlescrib..._confirm_this/ No comments there for last 20 days. Not really possible from that sample to conclude it is an issue for all Scribes, though it's hard to imagine that the tolerance could be off by that much. I just looked at my Oasis (9th generation) it has a gap around the glass, maybe 0.1mm. And of course it is waterproof. And yeah, I think I can see a little dust in there. But obviously it isn't going to get into the innards. I think it is to prevent a hard edge knock from getting transmitted to the glass and damaging it. I can imagine that's why Scribe has a gap as well. |

I decorated my Scribe with washi tape in my favorite color, sage. This also covered up the small gap around the edges. If anyone is concerned about the gap, this might help. I’m not concerned about the gap, I just like washi tape.

I had some notion it's in the gap. Probably not, but then where is it? I have same question about my Paperwhite SE, I can't see any evidence as to where it is. Just curious if anyone happens to know. Last edited by tomsem; 01-14-2023 at 06:14 PM. |

I just tried turning it on to see what happens and it went right down to 2 brightness, so, yes, I probably covered something up. |

Since Scribe is ambidextrous I'd guess it's on one of the sides (might be more than one?) but still hunting for it. Last edited by tomsem; 01-14-2023 at 07:02 PM. |

I think it was designed that way. Every reported Scribe has the same gap. I don't think it was a design flaw as that would be unintentional and since every Scribe has the same gap, this was an intentional design decision.

No. There are light sensors in there, on all 4 sides, I think. So these function as light wells.
I noticed that there is not the usual transparent window(s) in the bezel, which is how it's usually done and it occurred to me that they must be in the slots. Coincidentally, right about that time there was a post from someone who had covered them up with those decals some people like use to personalize. When I asked them to turn on auto brightness (they don't normally use it), they said it went down to 2! And indeed, I can confirm: when I cover one slot, brightness goes down a couple of notches, and when I cover all of the slots, brightness decreases proportionately. Uncover, it bumps back up. (though it seemed to get stuck at one point. I restarted and it's working as described.) Or maybe the edge of the glass functions as a light guide to channel it to the sensor(s). We should learn more when someone does a teardown. So while it is unusual, it's the way it is designed, not some design or assembly goof up. I'd love to know how and why they came up with this solution, and didn't just use something more conventional. Last edited by tomsem; 01-16-2023 at 03:32 AM. |
