Back when we had the Sony Reader PRS-500 and the 1st gen Kindle, I hardly read of co,plaints that they were too heavy. If we had devices even 1/2 the weight, we could have better batteries and easier to hold.

We've had this conversation before, over and over. Do you genuinely not remember? SOME people, like you, prefer a heavier device. People with painful hand disabilities tend not to. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. There is no one "easier" or "harder".

Just try, for one second, to imagine that there are other humans in the world who are people in their own right.

What I find a bit curious, although I have all the understanding and sympathy for those that forwhatever reason have a challenge holding a device for a time, why don't they rest it on something?

I'm pretty strong. I can hold any of my ereaders in the air reading if I want to, but I still find it way easier to put something soft on my belly and rest the reader there. Making the weight totally irrelevant.

I get we are different, some like to read laying on the side, etc. I'm just thinking aloud here. :-)

I'm nearsighted. Propping the reader on something would put it too far from a comfortable reading distance for me. The only way I can read is holding a device or a book up in the air. And I never read lying down. The only thing I do lying down is sleep.

So, weight is important to me, even though I have no physical disabilities.

The thing is, this is a new device. If it's heavier with a larger battery, and you don't want a heavier device, just buy one of the lighter devices instead. Let those of us who don't mind the extra weight buy it.

But I do agree to getting a stand that can sit on your lap to hold a device that you find too heavy to hold.

And vice versa. If it's a lighter device with a smaller battery, let those of us who do mind the weight buy it.

Can't. One of my cats usually occupies my lap.

It depends very much on how you read, I'd say. My e-reader is almost exclusively used for the type of things I'd read when I'm sitting in a comfortable chair, or in the bath. Resting something on my belly isn't really an option in either of those positions. Holding the book I'm reading in my hands is a lot more natural. Obviously we all have different postures which we prefer when reading, and there are certain types of texts which I'd only ever read at a desk, but I wouldn't have those on my e-reader.

There are a couple of Kindles (Oasis? Scribe?) with partially metal cases, in such a way that wifi still works and there's no weight penalty. I wonder if Kobo could go this route and go for the "more premium" (argh) market, or whether they're happy keeping everything plastic.

No metal back, please! That's just awful to hold, cold and slippery. Yeah, I have owned all the Oases and strongly prefer my plastic-backed Kobos.

The back being cold doesn't matter to me as I will have a case on it and I won't feel the back.

Yeah, but you're not bothered by weight anyway, so you would not be in the target market for a metal-backed and arguably lighter device.

Actually, I don't want the new Kobo to be metal. Metal would just raise the price.

The thing is, there should be a model for those who do want a bigger battery at the cost of slim/light. There are already devices for those that do.

It looks like it's going to have a pen, so a new Elipsa?

EDIT: Under the antenna applications, they mention GSM, LTE and WCDMA. Don't know if that means what they plan to use it for, or if it just means the antenna is capable of doing that.

From what I've seen in Walsin datasheets, that antenna would be a 2.4GHz/5.2GHz/5.8GHz Wifi tri-band/BT unit. Actually, if you refer to the part number segmented above the table, the L for antenna type that would appear to exactly that. So it's 36.09x9.36mm with a 10.1cm connecting cable ending in an IPEX IV micro-co-axial male connector specced for WiFi/BT triband.

If they release a lighter device with smaller battery the folks who want a heavier one can still buy it, and just get a USB battery pack. Heck you might even be able to strap two or three batteries on and rig something up so that they sequentially charge the kobo on demand. You get all the benefits of the new device, a nice hefty ereader, and undoubtedly longer battery life than anything on the market*.

* Assuming you get multiple large capacity batteries of course.
