The EpubMerge plugin, as implied, creates Epubs. It should be possible to create one then convert it.

OK, I just renamed a genuine MOBI to .EPUB, and opened it in the viewer and got the same error.

Part of FFF's configuration is setting the default output format. Perhaps that was set to mobi?

AO3 has its own epub download feature, so have an epub of an AO3 fanfic is not a guarantee that it's from FFF.

FanFicFare(FFF) can output mobi files as a legacy feature, but it's kind of terrible and I recommend epub output and calibre convert for all users.

Renaming a mobi to epub will definitely not work--the formats are completely different.

FFF anthologies can only be created as epubs.

If you still have an epub that won't open for you (and it's SFW), please post it for me to see.

Have you do an new downloads using FFF? Do they work correctly?

My initial thoughts are possible disk errors or full disk issues.

I have already gone through and started over again with the ones that weren't working and I haven't had issues with the new ones. I could have had the output as mobi in the configuration but since I am not so familiar with these things I can't remember if I had made any changes previously or not.

I am glad that I was able to make new ones without any problems so far but if I run across any more that I can post, I will post it here. Thanks for your help.
