Until fairly recently, the whole world did. It's not like I couldn't go back to paper books. But hey, if there is both, I found which format I prefer. If e-ink devices were to go away, I might go back to paper. I don't think I would like reading novels on a tablet (thought I would try it if I had to).

If it were possible to use the DRM tools without Calibre, I probably wouldn't have Calibre installed. I read mostly library books, so I have no need for fancy library management. I check out a book, read it, and delete it. My Libra SD card is nearly empty most of the time.

The car rental company Avis (who competed with the more successful Hertz), used to have a slogan: When you are number two, you try harder.

Presumably because they don't need to. Most Kindle users are a captive audience, because you can't read Kindle books on any other eink reader without removing the DRM or installing a Kindle app on an Android device, and your average user doesn't know or care about tinkering with such things. So willy-nilly they use their Kindles and are stuck with those. And Amazon can rest on their laurels.

You're not alone in this, of course. In fact, most ebook readers don't use Calibre at all, I'd guess. Those of us who do are a tiny, nerdy minority. There just are a lot of us gathered here on MR.

As for me, I installed Calibre and read up on DRM before buying my very first ebook with DRM. If DRM removal had not been possible, I'd have stuck to mostly paper books. Even so I didn't use Calibre for library management for a couple of years, only for backup. When my library grew to be more than a thousand books, I decided to use the full power of Calibre to manage it and haven't looked back since.

Overdrive isn't really available in my country (the choice is very limited), and the only local library who offers ebooks only does so via their website, no apps and no eink, so I've never been much for library borrowing.

I wish there was somewhere where I could handle a Libra. Those button look awfully close to the edge, but I don't think I've seen anyone complain about the ergonomics.

It sure is heavier and thicker than the Oasis, but not slippery and the back texture is nicely grippy. I liked the Libra 1 more ergonomically, as it was a bit lighter and thinner, but the Libra 2 is not bad either. The Oasis (both 2 and 3) was a bit too thin IMHO, and I hated the metal back.

This aside, the buttons on the Oasis were the best of any I've used. The Libra buttons aren't quite that good, although again they're not bad either. Only the outer ends of the buttons are responsive, not the inner parts. That should be kept in mind to avoid futile presses.

Thanks for that. Yes, I'm considering it as an alternative to my Oasis 2, and that's very helpful. While you're here, having handled both, could you compare the stiffness of the buttons of the two devices? I would prefer the Oasis buttons were a little softer, easier to press, but I think that might be an unpopular opinion.

IMO they're easy to press and not stiff (as long as you press on the outer end), but then I didn't think the Oasis buttons were stiff either. I sold my Oasis a month ago, so can only go by memory now. This seems to be one of those things that's highly individual and subjective anyway.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Libra is slower than the Oasis. Not a snail, but there's no instant response after touching something in the menu or the book list like on the Oasis. You'll have to wait a second or so. Page turns are fast enough for me. And the screen is better.

Kepubs tend to be faster on a Kobo than epubs.

Thanks for all that. It's appreciated. Speed is not a big deal to me, but a better screen would be.

I believe it is possible. Use older version of the tools, or I believe there is epubor, which uses code from the tools (I think).

Yes, I will buy a book if I plan to read it multiple times, and I would not buy an e-book without the ability to remove the DRM; otherwise, it's just a glorified rental, not a purchase.

OverDrive rarely has what I want to read, too, so I mostly use CloudLibrary via ADE for my library borrowing.

I've read this before, but I don't see a relevant Python script in the old DeDRM Tools package for stand-alone DRM removal. I've yet to see anyone say which script you're supposed to use.

Edit: on rethinking this, I don't want to bypass the MR guidelines, so I didn't send a PM.

Try asking on the tools website. I had it in version 3.8a of the tools.
