You don't need to restart the Kobo. But if the database is corrupt, that's a totally different issue.

Thanks!

Edit: Now I remember why I always remove the USB cable. Only ejecting the device with Calibre will not remove the black screen. Just tried.

The Kobo is effectively ejected as it disappears from Windows Explorer but the black screen remains. It's only after removing the USB cable that the Kobo interface is visible.
How long are you waiting after ejecting before pulling the USB cable? It's not instant after ejecting that the screen switches to the home screen.

I've tested and waited 10 minutes. Black screen.

When I plug the USB cable there's a screen:
- Computer detected
- Would you like to connect...?
- Cancel - Connect.

So I click Connect, the screen goes black and it says: Connected and charging

Open Calibre, wait a sec until I can see that the Kobo is detected, send some books, wait a little, and click Device -> Eject this device

The Kobo disappears from the Calibre interface and from Windows Explorer but the black screen remains.

It's only when I unplug the USB cable that the black screen flickers a little, disappears, the black progress bar (importing books) shows and the Kobo interface is visible. I've always thought this was normal behavior but maybe not.

EDIT: I've tried different USB ports in the PC but same behavior.

EDIT 2: Never mind. I've found the reason. I'm logged in the computer normally with a limited account, which by default doesn't have rights to unplug removable devices - though ejecting with Calibre works.
Tested with a regular account with Administrator rights and is working as expected. Eject with Calibre and the Kobo interface is visible right away

Now you can use NickelMenu to reconnect to the computer to update the metadata without having to unplug/replug the USB cable.

Sometimes the Kobo takes a minute or 2 to detect and process the eject event.
Have you waited that long?

Yes, I have. Done several tests with many minutes but same results.

It has something to do with the type of account used or even because I am running Calibre via RDP. It's installed in another computer.

I've gotten it to work when logged locally and with an account with admin rights.

You don't need to be admin, but it's likely the USB device and Calibre need to be on the same computer. I'd imagine it could be a remote computer via VNC, but the Kobo or other USB device would need to be on it.

I use the Calibre export to make a local backup which I copy to a different computer. Also I might copy the calibre files. But I'd only run Calibre and have the USB device and files all on the same computer.

Remote desktop Connection (RDC) CAN extend host drives to the client, but I don't know how far that feature goes in reverse (Making client attached drives appear at the host)

"Can". No g'tee. Also a USB MS device isn't exactly the same sort of thing as a non-removable SATA/IDE/SCSI etc drive
MS RDC itself wasn't great when I used it!

You are correct. It's not the account type. The culprit is RDP.

I have Calibre installed on my server which is always on so I can get books using the content server when I'm away.

I connect the Kobo to the server, so Calibre and the Kobo are on the same PC but I connect to the server and use Calibre from my PC via RDP. And that is definitely the cause of the Kobo behavior when ejecting it from Calibre.
