I'm thinking of a possible solution that would work in older software that does not support <aside>. For example, if you buy this as an ePub and read it on a Kobo as an ePub, then <aside> won't work. There is no way to be sure that this eBook would be read as KePub.

We were naughty and we did those. And if insisted upon, I may yet still, but we definitely and very strongly recommend that we simply convert them to inline textboxes (above one paragraph, below another) with some sort of visual aid to say "HEY! I am not in the normal flow of content!" to distinguish. We were silly and we wanted to see if it could be done (shades of Jurassic Park) not whether it SHOULD be done.
