MRPI doesn't kill USBNet, so it's fairly easy to follow along. The hard part is figuring out what's getting its panties in a bunch, and why (also, having an idea of what it should look like when working would help, too).
well, thank you very much for answering, I'm going to turn on airplane mode and wait for some good news in the next few months, I saw that some people are already waiting patiently with the new kindle basic firmware version (5.15.1)
at least it didn't kill my device, freaked me out when the screen went blank lol

Update to 5.15.1 after jailbreak works PW4/PW5

Just to confirm update to 5.15.1 does work and can preserve the jailbreak.

I purchased a kindle paperwhite kids edition that came with 5.14.2. Installed the jailbreak and KUAL along with renameotabinaries.

I then put the 5.15.1 binary onto the root of the kindle drive.

Next I went into KUAL and DISABLED renameotabinaries which caused a reboot and an immediate update to 5.15.1.

Next I copied the update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.16 to the root of the kindle then did a manual update from settings. The kindle installed the update and rebooted.

Then I added update_kualbooklet install to the mrpackages folder and executed ;log mrpi in the search bar. This reinstalled KUAL.

I then redid the renameotabinaries.

Everything seems to work as expected.

I also did this exact same process on a PW4 as a test before doing my PW5.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I'm not finding a lot of detailed instructions on firmware updates for an already jailbroken kindle.

I have an Oasis 3 which was jailbroken a couple years ago with the watchthis method. I'm currently using 5.13.6 but would like to update to something newer. I understand that 5.16.2.1.1 is the latest version that will maintain the jailbreak, so I would like to try installing that.

Will the method pmarcus mentioned work on this? I'm not sure what update_kualbooklet is or does either.

You should be able to update up to version 5.16.21 and preserve the jailbreak. A few things to know:
  1. Firmwares up to 5.16.2.1.1 can be upgraded to normally; the method mentioned above should work, and in general updating to those versions is well documented on the forum. The update_kualbooklet is part of the KUAL package (you will need the coplate version). Check NiLuJe’s hacks thread for details.
  2. Firmwares from 5.16.3 and upwards are not fully supported due to changes in the underlying framework. Basically very few of the hacks work, and the standard instructions on the forum cannot be relied upon. Unofficial test binaries working on those versions can be found on Marek’s page, but you’re basically on your own if something doesn’t work.
  3. By all means, do not update to version 5.17.1 or above if you wish to keep the jailbreak; this version kills jailbreak persistence, so you would lose the jailbreak altogether with no way of recovering it.

Thank you. I updated to 5.16.2.1.1 and reinstalled KUAL. If I ever want to go back to an earlier firmware version will this same method work?

EDIT: I've noticed the Downgrader 2.0 thread so I guess I'd need to use that if I ever want to downgrade. I don't see a reason to but if I ever want to it's good to know it's there.
