Possibly? I don't want to factory reset and have to re-add 1500 books. But that might happen.

Simply pressing the power button to enter sleep mode when you're done reading seems like a much simpler solution than doing a factory reset and hoping that it makes the sleepcover work properly again.

A cover that turns the reader off when folded back is faulty and should ideally be returned.
I use Forefront cases which work fine and are cheaper than the Kobo ones.
JSWolf swears by an equivalent made by kwmobile. - Both are available from amazon, depending on your location.
They are both probably made in the same Chinese factory.
I am using a Kobo sleep cover (red) and it's working with no problem. I do have a kwmobile sleep cover on my H2O and it works with no problem. I've had it for about 5 years.

If you have a sleep cover, and you want the sleep cover to work, your "solution" doesn't seem like a solution, just a work poor work around.

My point was that since the sleep cover is too old to be returned, and if fogice doesn't want to spend money buying a replacement, then using the power button to enter sleep mode is probably the only way to avoid both the battery drain at night and the random sleeping during the day. Yes, it would be ideal for Kobo to fix the firmware so that the automatic sleep timer works when the sleep cover is closed, but that's not going to happen in the short term.

A new sleep cover (not the kobo official one) would cost only a very few dollars and solve the problem, so it depends how much it's worth for you to solve it.
That's what I'd do though rather than fiddle around with foil, or have to turn it on and off.
But then we're all different

I used a magnet and found the location of the Sleepcover sensor, and placed folded foil between it and the back of the case. That seems to be working so far. It is hard to remember to turn off the power button when closing the case, since it used to work, and I have many years of muscle memory to defeat (between this and a Kindle Voyage).

Kobo and Amazon keep passing the buck back and forth. Hoping for a resolution soon...

The resolution is to buy a different case that has a working sleep cover.
