Amazon's changelogs are almost as bad as seeing a Team Fortress 2 update... and seeing only this in the changelog:

"Updated localization files".

Even now, the so called 'Discover Books card' (mentioned in What's New for previous version) has not shown up on Kindle. I think it was in the iOS app for a time (it was useless to me) and now there's something else in its place.

So with this new firmware, can we see covers for epubs when viewing the library? Or am I hoping for far too much?

If they were deliberate about this, they would not show thumbnails in the Kindle apps (iOS and Android/Fire).

I seem to remember that thumbnails would occasionally show for personal documents, but usually not. And of course side-loading (with calibre anyway) will give them to you.

They have certainly raised expectations by dropping support for mobi and officially supporting ePub.

Only for the email to Kindle address and Kindle publishing (where other than fixed layout mobis, mobi has been dead for over a year). No information that Amazon has made available suggests that their eInk devices and apps will directly support ePub at any time in the future.

Send to Kindle apps still have 20 days...

The latest release of Kindle for PC (1.38.0) now supports personal documents synced with the customer account. That feature was long missing from the PC app. This newly released feature shows only a generic cover thumbnail for these books.

So Amazon continues to be mixed in their support of covers for personal docs.

To actually answer the question, no.

There are no changes in this firmware that could affect cover thumbnails.

True. There is no sign of any impending change to Kindle apps or firmware to add support for EPUB. It appears that conversion by Amazon's servers using kindlegen will continue to be how EPUBs are handled. (And it will continue to be up to customers to deal with the flaws in that process.)
