Maybe Google is turning off ordinary IMAP & POP3 access by 3rd party clients by region, or you added it long ago. Go Account Settings and see.
Server Settings > Security Settings
Is Authentication method "Normal password" or "OAuth2"?
Certainly here Google sent emails warning this would happen and eventually blocked "Normal password". Now only OAuth2 can be used, but setup gives the OAuth2 provider (e.g. Google) too much personal information and difficult not to use SAME setting and link all Google accounts.
It only makes a difference at a Public WiFi point running malware (or maybe some Mobile Networks), and I started using a VPN to my router at home when using public WiFi about 15 years ago.

So...I looked through my settings for my account, and I don't see anything that says "Server Settings". I do have "Security" when I click on "Other Google account settings" under "Accounts and Import", but there is nothing that I can see about setting authentication method to either OAuth2 or Normal Password.

...and I *definitely* use Thunderbird to access my gmail and my google calendars for 3 different gmail accounts with no problems at all, and have been for many years.

2-step authorization is off. That's all I could find. I could not find Server Settings.

Are you saying that you are using public WiFi at your house?? Is that a normal thing where you live?

The other way around : when out in public and using random public WiFi all traffic is routed through home internet via VPN tunnel. For security reasons.

I got curious and tried emailing myself a book. I got the same error OP got.

So I looked into my account and my "Less secure app access" is gone now.

I also tried accessing that app password thingy, but it says it's not available for my google account.

So this is it for Calibre and emailing books to kindle?

I'm glad I don't do that anymore because this is another headache I don't want on top of Amazon's shenanigans.

App password are for any app /script / service that doesn't (for whatever reason) support that 2FA authorization workflow.
So instead of using your regular password + OTP code (or clicking on notification on your smart phone... whatever type of extra steps that are there for extra secure login) Google allows those "less secure apps" to use just "app password".

Calibre's "send via email" feature is just one of those cases where that type of authorization isn't implemented.

Public Wifi is like cafes, hotels, petrol station, mall. Not my home WiFi or home wifi of my relatives. Even HTTPS isn't secure it the WiFi point is malicious (either caused by drive by attack on a router with default password or a malicious owner). I imagine OAuth2 might be secure, but with a VPN to my home router it's irrelevant.

Thunderbird uses Server Settings for each email account you set up. They have changed the GUI over the years.

At mailbox name there is an v to open or fold the menu
v someone@someplace.wht
Server Settings
Copies and Folders
Composition & Addressing
Junk Settings
Disk Space
End-To-End Encryption (this is the actual message body, optional PGP etc)
Return Receipts
Click on Server Settings after opening the menu with v ir it was closed.

Server Settings
pop3 or imap for the mailbox, by Server Type.
Server name & port
User Name
Security Settings
Connection Security
Authentication method

Server Settings
[ ] Check for new messages at startup
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ] Leave messages on server

Message Storage

These settings exist on ANY desktop non-web mail client for each mail box.

Otherwise how would the program know where and how and how often to get email?

The GUI used to be far better, but mozilla has been slowly wrecking Firefox and Thunderbird.

If that's a gmail account, then sooner rather than later Google will block it. They'll email you first.

Obviously to cope with feedback/complaints etc they haven't done everywhere yet.
