Can confirm that Youtube and reader apps work. My iPad Mini 4 (seven years old) is running the current iOS so the latest apps. You have to go older than that before it can't. And even then - both Youtube and iBooks still run on my iPad 4, which is now ten years old.

Also Apple iOS is appalling for ability to simply copy stuff on/off via USB with zero ability to install other than via Apple.
I'm assuming you mean with a Windows computer, since on a Mac you can just transfer files directy in the Finder. Do you mean other than via iTunes for Windows, or something else?

1) Old iOS stuff is OK if the apps were installed. But Apple now forces removal of apps from store if not updated, so that a newer thing is needed.

2) I can transfer mp3s or ebooks to iPhone or iPad on Linux, but Apple's OWN apps won't read them. If you had previously installed 3rd party ereader or music player or audiobook player, then they'll work.

Android phone older than iPhone 4s still can have apps installed from Playstore.
Ancient Binatone tablet with Android 4 or something unsupported by playstore can have apks downloaded from archive sites and installed.

I have a pristine 32 G storage iPhone 4s and it's only good for calls and SMS or loading mp3s via iTunes on ancient game PC (iTunes terrible on Windows 7), because it only had stock out of the box apps when I was given it. It's not as good for calls as ANY phone I ever had!

Apple lost suit over deliberately slowing older iOS. No loading of apps except via Apple Store. Lost suit over warranty in EU (SOGA). Reduced functionality without Apple Cloud / "itunes" or Mac or Internet. Built in obsolescence as Store apps now must update regularly to latest iOS or be removed. About twice price of comparable functionality (I know there are premium Android at same price). You can buy a PC or laptop at 1/2 price of many iPhone and iPad models. Typically 70% margin on Apple products.
Gratuitous design changes such as removal of 3.5mm jack, causing extra expense and needing to charge earbuds, need BT to connect and play on HiFi etc. Poor ability to change parts. Even DRM so replacement parts have reduced functionality.

You clipped the part about how a seven year old iPad Mini is still running the latest iOS. (And has an earphone jack, incidentally.) Was that inconvenient for you? And I really wasn't inviting an overgeneralised anti-Apple rant, but I guess you really wanted to get that off your chest.
