I almost never connect my ereaders to wifi either. All my books are sideloaded via Calibre.
No one can track you with your ereader in the airplane mode. |

Thank you again for your helpful answers.
One thing that has always worried me about Kindle and the likes - if someone should steal it and turn wifi on are they able to buy books via your account or do you always have to input your password before you buy? |

You can password-protect a Kindle and PIN-protect a Kobo. You can deregister a Kindle via the Amazon website, if it's stolen, and also if you notify Amazon they'll blacklist the stolen device. I'm not sure what the Kobo policy about this is.

I simply have no store account (no payment method) on my kobos and the Kindles never leave the house (rarely even used). I only buy Amazon ebooks via the website.

My Kobos are all set up with Sideloaded Mode, thus not logged in. Actually simply hides the mostly pointless for me home page. The only Kindle Device setting I see on Amazon site is to disable collection of personal data. Doesn't apply to older devices. One Kindle account was setup with a gift voucher as payment method and that never has more than $10. Currently exhausted. I have no payment methods enabled on Android Playstore on phones or tablets. |

I've had Sony Readers and I moved to Kobo and I like it much better then any Sony Reader. One thing you can do with a Kobo that you cannot do with a Aony is that you can increase the weight of fonts. You can even side load them and choose which font you want to use. Plus the screen is much better given the improved resolution and contrast. And you have a front light to read in low/no light situations. |

Disabling 1-click doesn't include Kindles, AFAIK. As I said, you can set a password either for the Kindle itself or only the store.
