I almost never connect my ereaders to wifi either. All my books are sideloaded via Calibre.

No one can track you with your ereader in the airplane mode.

I've 3 WiFi points (one is part time in the workshop) but I never use them for computers or ereaders. By default WiFi is off on phone or tablet too unless Internet is needed.

Thank you again for your helpful answers.

One thing that has always worried me about Kindle and the likes - if someone should steal it and turn wifi on are they able to buy books via your account or do you always have to input your password before you buy?

You can password-protect a Kindle and PIN-protect a Kobo. You can deregister a Kindle via the Amazon website, if it's stolen, and also if you notify Amazon they'll blacklist the stolen device. I'm not sure what the Kobo policy about this is.

I simply have no store account (no payment method) on my kobos and the Kindles never leave the house (rarely even used). I only buy Amazon ebooks via the website.

Also

Though I have no idea if that includes Kindles. They are disabling "on device" purchases for older kindles. I wish there was an obvious place to disable it, or that "logging out" on the Kindle didn't cripple it.

My Kobos are all set up with Sideloaded Mode, thus not logged in. Actually simply hides the mostly pointless for me home page.

The only Kindle Device setting I see on Amazon site is to disable collection of personal data. Doesn't apply to older devices.

One Kindle account was setup with a gift voucher as payment method and that never has more than $10. Currently exhausted.

I have no payment methods enabled on Android Playstore on phones or tablets.

I know newer readers have much better viewing options but I don't like the fact that they all connect to the internet these days. I am a bit paranoid and don't want Amazon or any other similar company tracking me as I roam around with my reader. I put all my books on my laptop and just let that connect to my readers.

Anyway, I have finally bitten the bullet and got rid of all my lrf files - a huge step forward for me!
One thing you can do is install Fontforge (font editor) and use that it increase the weight of book antiqua. You have to do it for all 4 of font styles. Then when you embed this font, you can have it displayed at the weight you like. The default weight is too light for Sony Readers.

I've had Sony Readers and I moved to Kobo and I like it much better then any Sony Reader. One thing you can do with a Kobo that you cannot do with a Aony is that you can increase the weight of fonts. You can even side load them and choose which font you want to use. Plus the screen is much better given the improved resolution and contrast. And you have a front light to read in low/no light situations.

Disabling 1-click doesn't include Kindles, AFAIK. As I said, you can set a password either for the Kindle itself or only the store.

I suspected that.
But not a problem here. I could drill holes in the Kindles and they'd still be registered at Amazon.
