Could you maybe upload one of the books displaying the issue? Either one that is out of copyright or you could 'scramble' one:

[GUI Plugin] ScrambleEbook: Getting help with copyrighted books

In either case it needs to be free of DRM.

Then someone knowlegeble can take a look into the code.

I'd rather not scramble the copyright of any of the books, but you could try downloading a Dutch Kobo Plus title, if you have the appropriate account. For example, Mythos, by Stephen Fry. The last two words of page 3 (about Stephen Fry) are italicized (Fry Kronieken), but only when the Publisher default font is chosen (again, we're talking the Dutch edition).

I have to confess however that in my search for proper examples, it turned out that certainly not all of the Dutch publications refuse to display italics in other fonts. The fact that nevertheless quite a lot of them still do, may be something that I'll have to live with. Not a big deal, by the way.

Scrambling an eBook to post so it can be looked at is not a copyright violation. It's 100% legal. So please do so so we can have a look at the code.
