I know that the attachment zip at the end of post #2 works on calibre v3.48 (32-bit or 64-bit) on Win10 but I've never tested on WinXP because I don't have a PC that old. Probably faster to try it than to speculate. You'd need to install manually via
Prefs > Plugins > Load plug-in from file

2 other things:
  • The older plugin version (v0.4.1) on calibre 3.48 32-bit will restrict you to a single Voice, probably whatever Windows thinks is the current default.
  • I'm not sure that WinXP's built-in Voices would be good enough for lengthy listening.

Windows XP and Kindle DXG are about similar voice quality. OK if you are desperate and tey both sound very American of a more neutral kind.

I'll look at the Linux standard solutions.

Thanks

Yet Amazon could/can enable or disable TTS on a per book sale. Maybe they simply lost interest till accessibility issues raised.

Fire tablets do TTS in multiple languages and multiple voices. Also of course, you can get an Echo for even less, and it will TTS most Kindle books.
