I bought my Libra H2O (about 1 month before the Libra 2 was announced) from Walmart.com after buying my other Kobo's direct. I tried a trick someone told me about - I put the item in my "shopping cart" but did not complete the purchase. A couple of days later I got an email with a $20 off coupon. I am not a big Walmart fan, but... $20!
And I forgot about the logo, since my usually just sleeps.

I have a screensaver folder inside .Kobo/ and it shows images from that

The only walmart thing you see is the logo on restart

Also if you buy from Walmart you can return within 90 days for any reason. They'll even pay shipping

I ordered my H2O from Chapters in Canada. I paid no sales tax and it costs less even with shipping thanks to the exchange rate. Buying in the US, you could get slapped with sales tax.

Me, but mostly because I use the sleep cover, and seeing the cover image for a second before it is replaced by text whenever I open the device annoys me.

Me, for one. And anyone else who used the screensaver directory to allow displaying your choice of random sleep screen image. For the small amount of time, I normally see the sleep cover, I'd much rather see Bond of Union, Dream (Mantis Religiosa), Relativity, etc. Yes, I am rather fond of the works of Maurits Cornelis Escher.

My mother-in-law loves Escher. For me, I admire his work, but I'm not really a fan.

In Europe, the reseller FNAC used to have just their logo as the sleep page. You could get the book cover by changing the affiliate setting as mentioned earlier.

Thing is, firmware updates would reset the affiliate, and it would be necessary to change it again. Thankfully, FNAC got wise that stupidity was costing them sales, and nowadays they show the book cover with a small FNAC text blurb underneath.

I don't believe the firmware update every changed the affiliate. The firmware checks the affiliate weekly during a sync and corrects it as needed. If you are one of the people who keep WiFi off, then the only time the affiliate can be checked is when you turn on WiFi to get the firmware update.

There is a method to block the affiliate checking. It is done by a config file change setting the timestamp to something in the future.

My first Kobo was an Aura with FNAC affiliate I got from eBay. I changed the affiliate once and it never came back.

Odd as it sounds I do recall some issues with FNAC as the affiliate, I only remember because the person wanted custom screen savers which at the time required a mod and they had some issues specifically because of that affiliate and it returning upon updates.

Perhaps it was connected to geo location. Though at this point we’ll probably not figure it out unless whoever it was that had those issues is still active here and recalls how they resolved the issue.

I remember when I got my Aura, I couldn't set the book cover as the screensaver. FNAC didn't allow it. That was how I learned about changing the affiliate. Not that I think I was the person you are talking about.

For the last few firmware updates, you may find that your affiliate reverts back to it's factory setting when you sync your Kobo. You can set a string in the Kobo eReader.conf file to prevent this. Under the [ApplicationPreferences] heading, you can add:
Code:
LastAffiliateSyncTime=@Variant(\0\0\0\x10\0%\x94h\x3!>i\x2)
This will keep the affiliate check from happening for ~8.5 years.

See the FNAC affiliation reset on newer firmware (4.23.15548, maybe for more on this issue.
