(Why) Does ordering Kindle in US have extra taxes / bigger price then the one listed? - Page 2

When I was on a trip in the USA, I found that my purchase in one store had 4 separate taxes applied (state, county, city and ward(?)—I think that is what the sales clerk said when I asked about the various taxes were.

Amazon collects the state sales tax for the states which have it, and remits it to those states.

They don't "charge" sales tax.

Editing to add...I was glad when Amazon started collecting the sales tax. Before then, we were supposed to keep track of online purchases, and declare it on our Ohio return. That was a pain in the neck.

I confess to being both bemused and amused that people are shocked, shocked that things might be done differently in another country and on top of that are personally affronted.

My advice would be to educate yourself and move on, snickering if you’d like and/or it makes you feel better. And if it bothers you all that much, take your custom elsewhere.

Maybe it's better dealing with importing fees than dealing with the US sales tax system?

I recently looked into buying directly from Amazon to be shipped here, and it was actually cheaper than dealing with 3rd party sellers. I just gotta wait until there are sales. Like right now, for some reason, there aren't available pw5 without ads so it's more expensive.

It's a good thing our country don't have any extra sales tax, and we also have no import fees for sales below 200 USD. So I just gotta pay shipping.

... aaaaaaand naturally that there will be significant price discount for Kindles on amazon.de just couple of days after I bought it on amazon.com.

Currently that Paperwhite Kids bundle is discounted to 95€ (from 150€). Just my luck...

Not really dishonest. This is just the norm in the US. Even if you go to a brick and mortar Walmart or Target store, they don’t show prices with tax.

I'm pretty sure Amazon also adds whatever your countries import taxes are for the product is automatically. You're not paying US sales tax, you're paying the import tax/shipping fees of where ever you are shipping to. If I buy something off Amazon Japan for instance they remove the Japanese VAT so the subtotal goes down and then add the import tax. Amazon.com just adds the import tax because the subtotal is already without taxes.
