Is calibre from the LinuxMint repository or from the official calibre web site?

One thing I noticed is that the MOBI files produced by calibre contain images that are larger (in KB) than would be produced if Amazon's tools were used instead. Perhaps those images are larger than your older Kindle device can handle.

I found the mobi file type option in the docs and tried using --mobi-file-type 'new'. The images were not skewed in the Calibre viewer as they were before but I can't open these types of files on my older Kindle.

It is installed using the official Linux installer.

Doing some quick googling I see that Amazon has a Kindle Package Format. Is that the "Amazon tools" you're talking about? Do you think it would make a difference if I were to compress the images with a tool like TinyPNG before compiling the ebook with Calibre?

Older Kindle? You list a K4
That handles AZW3 just fine
(I don't use Mobi when I can avoid it. AZW3 uses stylesheets)

Using the azw3 file extension is working as expected. I'd still be curious to know why the mobi version is janky, but at least I've got a working solution.

Thank you all for your help with this. I really appreciate it.

I was referring to Amazon’s Kindle Previewer software and the older kindlegen. Both can produce MOBI files that contain the old and new format in a single file. The files they produce are less likely to have compatibility problems.
