Unfortunately, my euphoria came too soon! During installation of the portable version, I disabled Kaspersky for 10 minutes. It worked perfectly fine for 10 minutes, but, after Kaspersky was enabled again, I had the same issues as before. Disabling Kaspersky did not resolve the problem, apparently Kaspersky changed something (in the registry or somewhere else).

Further investigating...

One item to be aware of is that calibre and network storage are not a good combination. I would recommend that you move your database to local storage before you run into issues. See I am getting errors with my calibre library on a networked drive/NAS? in the calibre FAQs.

For the most part, if you are working on a local copy that is synchronized to the network and if you pause synchronization anytime you are using calibre, you can get away with this. If you mix live synchronization and calibre, the question is not if something will break but when it will break.

@DNSB: I just tried again to switch to safe mode (this time I verified that the network is on). And - no surprise anymore - it worked (both metadata and covers). Switching back to normal and I have my problems again. Disabling Kaspersky - no change. Still wondering why it worked at the beginning with the Calibre portable version, until Kaspersky was enabled again - and afterwards it made no difference anymore, if Kaspersky was enabled or disabled.

Most probably Kaspersky writes something somewhere (maybe to Windows Defender which automatically will be enabled when Kaspersky is disabled). Have to make further checks.

Regarding Dropbox, I have a local folder on my hard disk, that automatically will be synched with Dropbox. I never had any issues with this configuration. Same on macOS, my Dropbox files will be synched with a local directory.

Will further investigate tomorrow.

Thanks,
Claus
