I did mean to say something about the resolution. But, my overall point was that there is still a market for 6" ereaders. And I don't think it will go away. Dropping the Nia and then the price of the Clara HD makes sense. But, if they add audiobook support without raising the price, that will work as well.

And as to the idea that has been mentioned that the Nia is just to sell the Clara HD, the Australian prices for the ereaders at the lower end of the market are:
  • Kindle Basic 6" - 139
  • Kobo Nia 6" - 149
  • Kobo Clara HD 6" - 189
  • Kindle Paperwhite 6.8" - 239
  • Kobo Libra H2O - 269
  • Kobo Libra 2 - 279
  • Kindle Paperwhite 6.8" Signature - 289

Just on specs, the Nia is better than the Kindle Basic (screen resolution and light). That $10 would be easy to justify. And I can see the Nia as way to sell the Clara HD. Value wise, I think the Clara HD holds up well. And when it is on sale, it becomes very good. If it is going to lose sales at the moment, it will be because it is not a Kindle, and it is not waterproof. And I suspect that "not Kindle" is the main reason.

The price difference between the Kindle Basic and Paperwhite is too big for it to be there to sell the Paperwhite. To me that says that Amazon still thinks there is a market for a 6" ereader. Maybe we will see a replacement to the Basic with a better screen to match the Nia. Or even the Clara HD. Or it could disappear if Amazon isn't selling them.

Ditto re: 6-inch readers (I've never owned a 5 inch reader so can't comment on that).
I like the portability.
It would be nice to have buttons since I have issues with unintended results with the touchscreen functions on my Clara.

No, both devices came out of nowhere. Someone posted a screenshot from the Kobo home page and that was the first we knew of them. I don't think that the FCC submission has been found for either the Sage or Libra 2.

Sounds like you would like a PocketBook HD3. The screen is almost identical to the Clara and you can turn the touch screen off completely when reading.

Well, if they're going to update they would have to update something — so I proposed some "maybes." What I don't want changed is the basic hardware footprint. I like it just the way it is. And honestly I don't see why the Clara really needs updated at all. They could keep producing it exactly as is for the next five years and I think it would hold up well.

This. I recently picked up a Libra H2O, and while I'm enjoying it overall, there are moments when the square shape is awkward to pick up with one hand. The 6 inch screen ereaders are in a sweet spot, ergonomically.

Mostly I just use my Tolino and reserve the Clara for when I want the comfort light to read before falling asleep. But I'll keep the Pocketbook in mind in case I should decide to upgrade sometime.

Thinking of easy stuff that wouldn't require a big investment or costly redesign, I'd be happy with waterproofing and an oranger frontlight (since they seem to be doing that with the Libra). Maybe update the storage to 16GB or 32. More storage and waterproofing would be easy features to tout in advertisements on a Clara successor.

The 1,200 Carta would be nice too.

I'd also like the screen to be flush instead of recessed, but then that moves into the realm of redesign. If they do redesign, a new CPU would be cool. But Libra didn't get it, so why would the cheaper Clara?

At any rate, I hope Kobo doesn't stop making 6" readers.

Lately, I've been spending time reading on my old Nook ST w/Glowlight and I really like having the page turn buttons. As I switch between hands, I was thinking how awkward it would be if I had to flip the reader over each time I switch hands.

I really wish I could take the body of the Nook ST, slap a Carta screen in there with waterproofing and warm lighting. I'd have my perfect reader.

I think you have a good combination now. The Shine 2 is a really nice reader (and so is the Clara).

Isn't that pretty much what the Glowlight 3 is (except for waterproofing)?

No, the Glowlight 3 (and the big Glowlight Plus) took inspiration from the Nook ST, but they aren't the same.

The ST had a scalloped back that was comfortable to hold and the front bezel was a rubbery material with the buttons under the rubber (this would work well for waterproofing). Some people thought the buttons took too much pressure to press, but I liked that as I have never accidentally turned the page on my ST.

It is the only reader I've used where I can use the device one handed.

Jon will come along to slag on the Nook ST shortly. But I really do love mine. The initial reason I switched was I managed to break the substrate and getting a Nook ST w/Glowlight replacement that doesn't have defects on the screen isn't easy. (The refractive layer that spreads out the light is on the top, I believe and is prone to tears.)
