There are some issues with default font size when flipping between epub and kepub books. If you flip between the two frequently, you'll usually not be happy with the size. This has gotten slightly better in the latest firmware, but it's not totally fixed.

It would be nice if kobo at least saved the default font size separately for each format.

You can apply the patch to allow both ePub and KePub to have the same font size instead of different font sizes.

I tried that for a while, but it didn't fix the problem either, it just made the two sizes closer.

Last time I got a firmware update, I didn't bother to reapply the patch.

Instead, I typically use calibre to force the font size when I load epubs, since most of my books are kepubs.

I’ve had books change in font size while reading them, though this is exclusively in boxed sets so I’d be willing to bet it’s that the publisher just mashed the books together made the ToC and called it a day. I’m sure I could use Calibre to strip away font size information so every book and every part of a book would be equal in size but I’ve not looked into it as it’s not that big a deal to adjust the font when I open a book, or get to a new book within a boxed set that makes it change.

It's not a huge deal but as you can imagine given my screenshots it's somewhat irksome to open a book I was reading a few weeks ago to discover it now has only a few words per page. If "increase, decrease" every time I open a new book for the first time is more or less a fix that's useful to know. I'll try it.

One of the things I like about my kobo is that I seem to be able to set different fonts sizes and styles for each book I'm reading. For example, I'm reading a romance with Caudex; Shakespeare with Gill Sans set to small. If I was reading a horror I might choose deja vu Serif eink. I often have several books on the go at once, it's nice that the kobo remembers their fonts.

I generally go with publisher default font but do sometimes find that the size a book initially opens with is crazy.
It sounds like I need to deliberately change the font size even if I like what I get first time.

One thing to remember is the settings in the book's CSS are also in play. I recently purchased a 5 book series. 3 of the books had a font size defined for the body as 0.833333em while the other two had the body font size defined as 1em. The same 3 also used a line height that made the books look like my old high school double-spaced essays. I edited the books to correct what I saw as issues. Whether you would willing to do the same would depend on how comfortable you are digging into the internals of an epub.

Yeah, unfortunately this is pretty common. I edit those things as well, any base font size other than 1em gets deleted. Line-height values go away too.

With this and the unified font sizes patch, I always have the same font size in every book, epub or kepub. Of course I almost never change fonts. LexiaDama has been my favorite for years and I feel no urge to switch to something else, regardless of the genre.

I do the same. Except I use ChareInk as my font. I see no need to have different fonts for different genres.

I've just had crazily big and/or small fonts on several books I've read recently in a row. I wish I knew how to make this happen reliably so I could describe the steps here. These were books I'd read within the last week, not months ago.

The only way to make font sizes consistent is to have a look at the HTML and CSS and fix any font sizes that are too large or too small for the main body text.

I do that too but it has nothing to do with the epub/kepub discrepancy.

Caudex is my favorite. I find it easier to read, although I can't really say why. It's restful.
