Not to dredge up an old thread but thought this may be of use if somebody else runs into this problem.

As of my last post in July I had purchased a cheap USB mini-hub. And it worked great exactly one time. In subsequent attempts after my initial success this method also failed to bring up the connection menu on the H2O. Just like plugging it into the MacBook Air it would charge but no connection menu.

I went back to my old MBA and used it to manage my reader which was somewhat a PITA. So tonight I looked back at this thread and decided to give NickelMenu try even though I'm not a coder and had no idea what I was doing. It took a while and many failed tries but I finally figured it out.

So now I can plug my new MBA into my H2O, hit the new NickelMenu item I created and it connects every time. Much better!

I don't know who developed NickelMenu and provided the website and instructions but my deepest gratitude to you.

solved using nickel menu!

I am so glad I found this thread!

TL;DR: Solved using "Force USB Connection" with Nickelmenu.

I just got a M1 MacBook Air with only has USB-C ports. I didn't want to buy a bunch of docks/hubs/cables trying my luck. I have the Anker USB-C to USB-A adaptor [Model Number: A8731] which works to connect all of my USB-A devices into my USB-C port in my MacBook Air, EXCEPT my Kobo Aura. When I plug it into my MacBook Air, the kobo starts charging immediately but that "Connect to Computer" prompt NEVER comes up, no matter what ports I try. I tried rebooting and a bunch of different cables too.

My Aura was already finicky and only lets me use the original Kobo cable on my 2013 MacBook Pro.

Based on this thread I connected my Kobo to my MacBook Pro 2013, then installed Nickelmenu, then added this configuration:
Code:
menu_item:main:ForceUSB:nickel_misc:force_usb_connection
After I connected the Kobo to MacBook Air M1, and saw the charging indicator turn on, I pressed my new NickelMenu "ForceUSB" and BAM it works!

I am using the following: Kobo connects to original Kobo USB-A to USB-Micro cable. The USB-A end goes into the Anker adapter. The Anker adapter goes into my MacBook Air's USB-C port. The order of which cable to plug in first doesn't seem to matter.
