Hmm! I wonder if it was intermittently engaging sleep, so it was constantly going to sleep and waking up again? That would certainly use rather a lot of power

I suspect most IT types from that era would have a similar story.
I went to fix a computer and they were asked if they tried different sockets and they said they had. Turned out the powerstrip was defective.

And the worst type of computer to ever work on was one where the user smoked and probable others in the office did as well. That is seriously disgusting.

One time I ran into a situation where an office computer would not power on. When I asked if the computer, monitor, etc. were all plugged into the power bar, I was told yes and a lamp plugged into the outlet worked. When I arrived and looked at the power bar, everything was plugged into it... including the power bar. I had to unplug the lamp to free up an wall outlet for the power bar.

As for smokers? Dust and smoke residue is disgusting. Add in cat hair in a home use computer for that added level of revulsion.

I'm just picturing Mobileread users trying to get anywhere near an MRI room with an ereader in hand. They'd be tackled to the ground by burly orderlies in quick order.

Mice = I'd hate to be visiting Australia at this specific moment, at least until they get that problem fixed. Same with spiders - from the news I saw just 10 minutes ago.

Australia's a very big place - the plague is largely affecting the Eastern states, from Brisbane down to Victoria. Large swathes are unaffected.

(The spider situation was just a few webs in Victoria after the floods. Not even venomous spiders.)

A friend of mine had to fix a failed fan inside a PC that had been running (as the, uh, guts of some semi-embedded display) in a slaughterhouse, for years.

I am reliably told that the inside was unimaginably disgusting. And you can't even hose it down...

Australia has non-venomous spiders?

It's been a long and strange path from the safety of magnetic covers...

The drop bears aren't venomous either. It's not quite like XXX in Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

"not quite" being the key phrase according to this documentary footage.

I have magnets on all but one cover and never had a problem with a screen. The only potential problem I can think of with magnets is if you have a pacemaker and fall asleep with your ereader on your chest or near your wires. I don't even know if THAT is a problem - but it's been a gadget discussion recently regarding latest iphone. I will have a pacemaker within the next 5 years, so I should pay more attention, but gadgets change so much year to year.
