Also, for the Reader owners, I think about 250 of the 1001 books are available, but I didn't do the best job searching so I could be wrong.
This is what you do..
Open it in google docs by going to google docs and hitting Upload, find the xls, and upload it

then when you have the document, click, Share, then Share with the world. allow people who are not logged in to View. than just copy and paste the url here.

if you cant figure it out, just upload the XLS anywhere like media fire, and ill do it all for you.

I picked it so that people can view without signing in, I'm not sure why it is not working. I resaved it - give it another shot.

My apologies, that was Google not liking my browser of choice I wasn't thinking about that when I clicked on it. It is shared correctly.

Phew. I was about to get upset with Google there for a minute, would have felt like blasphemy.

I like that people can edit it with the author's permission. I'm sure that something cool could be done with that.

Well, I hope everyone likes this! Again, please post how many you've read so I can feel incredibly uncultured :P

I LOVED the Dirk Gently books. Both my physical copies are literally falling apart.

The first one has so many wonderful ideas in it, and the second uses St Pancras station as Valhalla, and I'm sure JK Rowling nicked the street lamp idea from it.

But even for people who like HitchHikers I wouldn't classify them as must-reads. They're a little too quirky for that.

I'd just point out something that you have been so humble as to not point out. You appear to have created this clickable list yourself, broken up into sections (pre-1700, 1700's, et cetera). That's mighty fine work, ficbot, and I thank you for it. Good stuff.

Cheers,
Marc

I can't take seriously any list like that which doesn't have Le Morte D'Arthur by Sir Thomas Mallory on it.

I understand why they might overlook genre specific writers like Patrick O'Brian and John D. MacDonald though I think they were two of the 20 finest writers of the 20th century. But where are William Mansfield and David McCullough? There are four Dashiell Hammet's on there and he was not a better writer than any of the writers above.

Like I said, it's not the best list, but it is still fun...

I can't take seriously the list which has The Murder of Roger Ackroyd as the only book worth reading by Agatha Christie...

why this one?

I do not know the origin of the list but isn't some choices explained if you take how influential the book or author have been? Dashiel Hammet ir more influential than John D. MacDonald for example.
