FWIW I have my Main Library (yes, that is its name ) on a different partition (drive letter). That way you can repair Windows with a good chance of it surviving.
Get a Live CD copy of GParted. Great tool for adjusting drive configurations. (many Linux distros also include this on a Linux LiveCD )
You just boot the CD and tweak your drive. It can Shrink or Grow existing partitions within the capability of the drive

Thanks for the suggestion, I may try that. Is using a partitioned drive intuitive, after I create one? What the heck does this mean (from the GParted website)?
"Aligning partitions to mebibyte (MiB) boundaries works well with modern Operating Systems and all types of disk devices." I have an SSD laptop.

I have an external drive I can use, but it's a pain to plug it in when I want to open Calibre. Same with Photos. I moved all my photos to the external because my HD was full. A little inconvenient but I guess it's worth the space saved.

Not sure if I would do this on a SSD.

My take:
Make the size fit the device geometry. HD had 'cylinders'. These were a single actuator position, writing to all platters, then the head needs to move.
If you make an arbitrary size, the remnant may be wasted as a new partition does not start midway on a cylinder.
