Nope, I paid because else I'd have suffocated under paper books.

I don't use sync or the built-in store on any of my ereaders. All my books are sideloaded, even those purchased from the aforementioned stores. Wifi is off. But hey, it doesn't bother me in the least that others use these features.

It's your device. Use it however you'd like.

I have a friend who never turns the WiFi on for his Clara. I told him last night he might want to upgrade his firmware by turning WiFi on for a bit because of the new updates to sorting, but he just said, "Huh…". In my mind, I could see him shrugging his shoulders. I bet he'll never bother upgrading. Some people can't be bothered. They like things working just fine the way they are.

Because I don't need it and it just eats battery. I do turn wifi on once in a while when I want the firmware update (I don't bother with every update, just some of them). When I first started to use Kindles, I used direct downloading and syncing constantly. Then the problems started... poor formatting, stuck indexing, books not downloading and so on. I found it faster and easier to fix things with Calibre and just sideload everything from there.

Also I use custom font sizes (the font-ramp hack) on my Oasis and those don't work with direct downloads.

Just yesterday I tried to download a couple of old personal docs I had in my Kindle cloud. Nope... queuing, but not downloading, no matter what I tried. Eh. Back to Calibre and sideloading.
